Are the residents of this Town aware that there is bond referendum coming up in August which will greatly expand the library? They intend to pay $600,000.00 to the owner of Cohen's defunct bakery. They do not state what the current assessment is on the tax rolls. Then they wish to spend over 5 million renovating the building. They say it will cost very little. What they don't say is that the operating costs of the library will go up dramatically and that the staff will demand increases in salary commensurate with the new building. There are those who believe that the library is already overstaffed. The current budget is enormous. The old building will surely remain derelict. The new building will go off the tax rolls. I can tell you that there are many times when the current library is almost empty. There are days when most of the newspapers are unread. Most of the people who come to the library are taking out DVD's or using the computer. There is absolutely no need for a new and expensive library except in the minds of the library staff and trustees. Voters of the Town of Thompson wake up and smell the coffee before even more of your tax dollars are wasted!

The libary already has a large budget. The director, librarian and others earn substantially more than at the majority of libraries in Sullivan County. When you go to the library it appears that these people have very little to do. I would also note that they appear to be absent from the building on many occasions. This whole idea is ridiculous and a waste of our money. What are they not telling the public? How did they arrive at $600,000. for an empty building with a failed business? Why has this been done so quickly with so little input from the public? How much will this cost in lost taxes?

My taxes are too high already and for these people to want to spend even more money on another boondoggle is wrong. The current library is sufficient for the number of patrons who go to the library. Do they think that if they build a big lavish building that more people will come? I don't think so. It is time that we take a stand. Many people are barely able to stay in their homes. The only people in favor of this are a handful of people at the library and their freinds. They are hoping that nobody comes out to vote and they get what they want. Can the village afford to lose a taxpaying building? There is something very suspicious about all of this. They seem to be very anxious to hand over an enormous amount of money.
