They prety much let the residents run the place and they come and go whenever they like. They sneek out at knight and get drugs because there is no security and they dont randum piss test you. If your real searious about quiting dont go there.

Check out the Recovery Center at 17 Hamilton Avenue in Monticello. They have many programs and I have spoken to people with very positive outcomes, both young and old.

Please, does anyone else have any information re: Daytop Village residential facility in Swan Lake, NY. I have heard horror stories of lack of medical treatment/substance and alcohol treatment and the lack of; using residents for unpaid staff members; counselors cruel, disrepectful, holding residents for lenthy and unreasonable time frames, and many other unprofessional and fraudulent activites; falsifying medical/treatment records; lack of any treatment or discharge plans.....how does one get out of there?

Daytop is an abusive place run by a bunch of thugs who think abuse is treatment and that being a dry drunk makes them qualified to treat people abusively.

I am a former resident of one of the facilities of Daytop..The place saved my life..YES IT IS RUN BY THE RESIDENTS....because the house occupants run the top of the food chain and EVERYONE has their turn to be the top...Yes there are ex-cons...I was one of them...ITS A DRUG TREATMENT FACILITY WITH A CAUSE...do not believe people who slander these facilities...perhaps they didn't get the concept and perhaps didn't get recovery..sad for them...either they are absent from the drugs...and still exhibit drug addict tendencies...or they slip and slide in and out of addiction...
Some take longer others may get it over night..but the truth is if you or anyone you know wants to stop using drugs this place will benefit your life and enhance it greatly....

Please stop the slander,I would bet my bottom dollar that these horror stories come from drop outs..Yes its tuff at first, until you get familiarized with the principles its easy to have misinterpretations if your not there for atleast a month..
The discipline hit me like a ton of bricks at first, but I assure you if you stay it will change your life..
It's ran by the clients for a reason, and is its secret to its success..Only people that are serious about recovering, and shown great leadership skills are at the top of the chain..
Everyone at some point moves up,this teaches respect and responsibility....
Research yourself and draw your own conclusions....
In closing,Daytop has a 88% success rate...
Debb you probley got manipulated and your son has most likely relapsed if he didn't stay......

They should NOT have 6 people in a room with no air conditioner, no fan, no central air, it's REHAB not PRISON!!!!

I have commented on alot of the comments above below all the other comments stating "SWAN LAKE" is a great facility.. Don't listen to any of those comments, IT's HORRIBLE! My son ended up in the ER for anxiety, there is no respect and they literally BREAK YOU DOWN by calling you names and the facility is DIRTY!! If you want recovery go someone else, if you want PRISON -BOOT CAMP, go to SWAN LAKE.

I wouldn't go to daytop, it is run by ex addicts who were all cons who went to daytop to avoid jail. It is dirty , they have had bed bug problems, they lie about their success rate to get more people sent there by the courts. The biggest problem is the lack of security.if a 400 lb thug jumps you there is mo one there to stop ot quickly enough.daytop are always being sued for that reason

Of course there are always going to be the "horror stories" by those who didn't grasp the concept. This is one of the top AOD programs in the country for a reason. It is also rapidly evolving and they are incorporating cutting edge treatment methods. It will always be based on TC concepts and no, it isn't easy. The place has highly trained doctors, nurses, social workers, clinicians, and also hires some former clients to help counsel to utilize the "role modeling" concept. People who struggle there tend to leave treatment early and slander the place. Daytop is a top notch program with caring staff. It works if you work it. People will always harp on negatives but not give credit to a place that has saved many lives. The old style treatment from thr 70s-80s is no longer practiced. The pride themselves on deserving clients helping run the day to day activities in the residential environment. This is all part of instilling responsibility and goal driven treatment to empower individuals to become the best they can be. It is not supposed to be easy, if it was many more people would find sobriety. Daytop is now incorporating the disease concept, motivational interviewing, specialized trauma tracts, and individualized treatment. I would highly suggest this program to anyone who is in need of help. The have an extremely effective family association and the program helps. You can call for more information and get brochures and informative materials mailed to you. Daytop prides itself on being client centered and is regularly one of the highest rated programs by OASAS (NYS regulatory compliance agency when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction services.) You can read their report card on the OASAS site if you don't believe it. Check it out sometime you will be pleasantly surprised. Again, ignore the naysayers there will always be those who have hard feelings towards a program but it has evolved far beyond the old TC mentality and is making progressive strides in continuing to reach clients of all race and gender. Hope this helps.

I was in Daytop from 2009-10. I can tell you firsthand that DT does have some good people there, but it is chaos. Too many clients for one.
The scandals are endless with both clients and staff. How does one expect to get proper treatment with all of the distractions? Also, with up to 300 clients in each facilty, no one gets the proper attention. Too many "fake" addicts just there to avoid a prison sentence mixed in with "real" addicts needing serious attention.
The Daytop Far Rockaway facilty is a real den of iniquity!

I can tell w/o hesitaion that not only should Swan Lake Lake be closed but the whole TC thing should be put to bed for good. I do not know who compiled data or how it was skewed, I can speak of Swan Lake today. It is primarily run by former clients who are long on knowing a one trick pony approach to CD, though that approach sailed w/the Titanic, & short on credentialed education. Their former director had a good enough diploma & the reigning doofass has less. It is run on sarcasm, hunches, lying, treating employees and staff like dirt. They have comminted thousands of medicaid fruads by giving clients other clients meds. There were times clients went w/o meds who needed them to control sucicidal ideations. They did nothing more than warehouse people who chose treatment over prison, who did nothing more than harass clients who were unable to defend themselves. Gay clt's were often cat called and staff did nothing Who knows what happened in the dorms, where there was no supervision . They would occasionally allow a Sullivan County Deputy to come into the facility because he was a son to one of the counselors, so much for HIPPA. They have maintained a revolving door pricatice of hiring and firing non Daytop personel just to fill the ranks w/people who are so profoundly stupid, they should not be allowed out w/o adult supervision, which by the by does not exist there. Daytop should close forthwith, & there should be an investigation into thier finances, there hring and firing procatices, and abuse of clients. Good riddance you morons.

read my post. I have enough to put a good deal of them in jail, and the rest from working in the field again. I was there, I saw it all.

Least therapeutic community!!
I just spent 5months on Swan Lake and don't really have anything positive to say about it. The facility is extremely understaffed, lacks structure and theirs nothing therapeutic to help with recovery here. Daytop lacks care and concern for their clients and is only interested in profits and not their clients best interest because of that some people stay upstate for as long as 15months before rotating.
Let me start out by telling you a little about my self and my experience at Swan Lake Daytop so you know what to expect from this dump. I was up there from Jan-May 2012 during which time they declared Chapter11 bankruptcy, got rid of about a dozen staff members that have been there for years and replaced them with only a couple of less qualified/ experienced councilors to lower salary expenses. When I first got there before the lack of staff there was about 12clients on each councilors case load,(OASIS suggests a maximum of 13) but when I left 5months later there was at least 25clients for each staff (good luck trying to get any kind of individual session or even a chance to talk during group lol). The lack of clinical staff also shows in the lack and inconsistency of all the different groups because there simply isn't enough staff and even the director and assistant director were forced by OASIS to take on caseloads of their own.
The facility consist of several buildings scattered over a few acres of property . There are 3 separate buildings for dorms, a gym, main facility and a warehouse. The dorms are defiantly pretty old and aren't in the best shape (need painting, holes in walls, broken lights and doors) plus have dry electric heat and run out of hot water. The gym is very primitive and is definitely not the multi million dollar gym that people claimed it to be but has the basics for weight training but no tread mills or card equipment.
The food sucked and was the worst that I have seen in a program like this. It might have been due to the financial situation of Daytop but there were several occasions where the food delivery didn't come and staff would go to the supermarket because there would be nothing to eat. The entire time I was there they always claimed to be having a food shortage. There was also a similar problem with linens and a lack of clean sheets.
Another issue I have with Swan Lake Daytop is the fact that their Director by the name James Rizzo was just recently a client only 3 years back. He went through the staff internship program and became a counselor. Due to all the budget cuts and lay offs he managed to slip in to the top spot at the facility but clearly lacks knowledge, experience or education for the position, in which his predecessor was for over a decade. The assistant director Sarah Etter is also new to the field and it shows in her inability to run encounter groups or make proper clinical decisions without letting her feeling get involved or favoritism.
If you are looking for help and trying to get your life back on track I would not recommend this place. Majority of the people there are court mandated and aren't looking for help but just trying to beet a bid. They insist on lengthy stays of 6months or more but most days are a waste of time consisting of boredom, free time, TV, card/board games and not groups, seminars or therapeutic functions from which you could benefit and learn something. There is a great deal of jail house mentality due to the fact of most clients criminal backgrounds and the environment didn't exactly feel safe as it should. I witnessed several fist fights and verbal altercations occur on a daily basis and usually theirs no one to stop or break them up due to the lack of staff. There was also a major problem with sneak thieving and steeling things from peoples rooms when every one is up at the main facility during the day.
