The way I see it, unless you got $$$ to burn, a lawsuit is probably an endless $$$ pit. Check out some of the posts about the couple suing topix. I don't know it they will give out IP addresses or not. I never take any of this nonsense seriously, it's just funny to read. I don't think the majority of people take it seriously, they just post to geta rise outta somebody. Usually if you contact topix they will remove a post of thread within 24hrs. Good luck, sorry for your bad experience. Sometimes it helps if you try not to take yourself so serious. :)

u can trace an IP without lawyers. well, I can anyways. u just have to have the programs to do it with. I know for a fact that I can trace an IP address from an e-mail, or trace a website its self. havent tried to track a comment on a public forum yet, but Im sure it can be done. And it dont matter if someone gives out an IP address or not, u dont need them to be givin to u. u can get any IP number that is or has been conected to ur PC by using the command prompt on ur computer and typing in the D.O.S. commands for what u want it to do. if u have never messed with any of this kind of stuff, I wouldnt try it. Get somebody that knows what they are doing.

I use a program called McAfee Visual Trace (formally NeoTrace). it will usually trace the IP address, give you the registrant and contact info, plus the server name and ISP. Once u have all of that, u can report the user to their internet provider (ISP) and they will no longer be able to use the internet. I havent figured out how to trace a specific comment yet, but I got the abuse contact info for topix.com posted above
nope

That wouldn't be a form of hacking. The information is on his computer. He has a right to any info on HIS computer. If he got into someone else's computer for information. That would be a form of hacking.

I wanted to trace an IP #, because of the trash my
little girl was getting. I went to an attorney here in town, and he wanted $10,000 up front, and
then $500/hr.....needless to say it wasn't worth
that to me.
And he said that it would probably be 6 mos. before we knew anything, and then may never know for sure who was commenting on Topix.

to find out IP information on someone that posts a comment on here, u need to get that person to connect to ur computer directly, as in an e-mail, or private message. once u get them to talk to u one on one, then u can go to ur DOS prompt screen and check the open connections to ur computer. make sure ur not on any other websites or talking to anybody else at this time because it will show all connections running. trick the person that made the comment into a private conversation or e-mail. once u get a one on one connection with the person, go to ur prompt screen, type in "command" and then "netstat" this will bring up a list of open connections, ports being used, and IP numbers for everyone connected to ur computer. Now u just have to sort through and figure out wich IP number u need. the less u have open on ur computer, the less IP numbers u will see.

Unless you or your family is being threatened, I wouldn't bother with legal action. Slander, libel, and defamation is hard to prove - even if you have a post on here to prove it. You must prove the person who posted it intended to cause harm to you.
It just isn't worth the time and money. There are few lawyers around here who could actually win a libel, slander, or defamation case.
