The money that Monticello owes for poor decisions becomes the money that Wayne County Schools will owe.

The Monticello School system has 850 students. The State has made overtures…the new system will need to address its school colors, mascot, and building arrangements to allow for a smoother transition.

There could be two High Schools serving the students and families of Wayne County. We need not go far (Pulaski County) to see examples of this.

If a merger does occur, the tax payers of Monticello & Wayne County will see tax increases. Please note; both schools have long enjoyed receiving grants for funding educational opportunities. Future grants will need to be stretched to serve the “new” student population.

Will the "new" school be able to address the resentment/animosity between the students/staffs of Monticello and Wayne County?

Is this all about the money the Monticello School system owes, or is there something else at play?

If it is about the money, the School’s Attorney needs to file a claim with the Bonding Company seeking compensation for bad decisions (land purchases) made by the Superintendent and School Board Members.

There is no, "possibly". This is set in stone happening because Monticello poorly managed their money. Also, there is no "new" school, only Wayne county adapting to handle an influx of poorly educated degenerates. Get some facts before posting.

Sincerely, you are a moron.

I agree it will cost more to close and move the school. Why not leave Monticello School where it's at and just have 1 superintendent to run both schools. Monticello has recently revenoted their school so why put money into Turner building? Pulaski Co. And N laurel and S laurel and East and Weat Jessimine has different schools but 1 superintendent. Moving the school and the students is going to cost the taxpayers more money. Plus think of the jobs that will be lost Wayne County will not cut their staff just so Monticello staff can have jobs. Alot to think about. There is more too this. Wayne Co is to eager to take Monticello over, it's not just for the kids once this merging takes place alor of kids won't be able to play sports or be involved in other activities at Wayne County. It's who you are and who you know at Wayne Co. Why do you think so many Mexicans go to Monticello? They are included not excluded like they would be at Wayne Co.

And McCracken county is closing for large schools to create the largest high school in the state next year. It's what the local board deems appropriate for the district and the county.

Maintaining a separate school is the worst situation possible. Animosity will only grow.

There will be students who will not be able to make the basketball team. That is a reality but look at the other opportunities: jrotc, football, wrestling, and those are just a few. I'm sure wc will start a soccer program too.

This community can not go into this thing assuming the worst.

I'm sure there will be many decisions to be thought about and made in any school merger. From a financial standpoint, it would make better sense to use the Monticello facility since the MS/HS and Elementary buildings are fairly new to replace Walker and Turner with a K-5 elementary at Monticello (and call it Monticello Elementary if they wish for good-will and trasitioning). This will save the Wayne County system probably anywhere between $8-$10 Million dollars to construct a new building down the road. Monticello keeps its colors, mascot, and identity, and as the children pass through the elementary they will all transition more easily and together to Wayne Middle and then Wayne High. The facility is there, it's practically new, so why not make use of it to benefit all the children and the taxpayers as well.

Is it a merger? I thought MIS was being forced to close. You have some good points, but if it is closing then they no longer exist. Why should children going to Wayne County be forced to go to "Monticello Elemetary".If they use the facility then it should be Wayne Elementary.

There will not be a transition. MIS is out of business. It is not a merger. The system will cease to exist. The students will now attend The Wayne Co School System. The teachers, staff and all other personell will be unemployed unless they are hired by the county school. If not it is the unemployment office for them. The MIS board no longer has a say in what happens to the students. Their future as students at the Wayne County School System. There will be no change in name or mascots. The Trojan is a thing of the past which is not what it is about anyway but this talk of changing names of the school and mascots is wishful thinking. Look at it this way. If a business goes belly up and closes its doors does the new business that takes its place have to keep it name or motto or does it keep it own identity?

Yes,it would still be a Wayne County school whatever name they choose. Just saying that it would save the county alot of money from having to build a new one for K-5 at some point. I was thinking something like they did with London Elementary, Stanford Elementary, Lancaster Elementary, Jamestown Elementary, etc. as part of the county school system.

The Laurels, Pulaskis and Jessamines are basically two schools of EQUAL size.
All the small independent schools like Monticello (Harrodsburg, Richmond Madison, Lynch etc...) are eliminated. Wayne isn't big enough for two schools. That's part of the problem already.
Using the building for an elementary school sounds like a good idea though. There's nothing wrong with keeping the name Monticello at an elementary school.
one question

who is going to go to jail over the mismanagement of the funds. someone or several persons did things that brought this on. i personally beleive that the attorney general's office should send their investigators and auditors to the school and find out just who, or what group of persons are responsible for this. it all comes down to 300,000 dollar ball feilds not just one of them, but two of them. these individuals should go to prison beginning with the superintendents that were involved with the purchase, sale, and making money on the properties. that is my opinion. like it or not. tax payer dollars that were mismanaged and used illegally while lining the pockets of a small select group. so the question is. WHO IS GOING TO PRISON. what superintendants family member went to work at wayne county just after the purchase of the property. what superintendant was part of the reality company that sold the property and made money from the transaction, what construction company was paid with several amounts that was below the amount that had to be reported to the KDE and the board of education, what teacher was involved with the property and the reality company whose family owned part of the property and after the sale went to work at wayne county. just asking if any one knows the answer.

That's some interesting questions! Deliberately avoiding the bid laws, questionable conflicts of interests, failure to get KDE approval and shady land deals? Surely not? This could surpass the deal for the Wayne County bus garage several years ago at a huge cost that left a couple of people smiling all the way to the bank and almost bankrupting the county schools leading to the next Supt. raising the county school tax to the highest level possible...just look at your property tax bill and see how much. It's a shame how officials can walk away leaving students, parents, and tax payers to bear the costs.

Don't say poorly educated. John Dalton who is superintendent at Wayne County went there (graduated from there) Sara Beth Gregory who just became the senator graduated from there. Don't say this negative stuff. Many other business, successful people graduated form there. So just keep that to yourself.

Monticello Mom, the kids will transition fine if the parents just shut up and leave it be. The kids are not the problem its the adults.

The deal is done. Wayne County is already working on the plan on how to handle the kids so it goes smooth for the kids. Everyone at Wayne County wants this to go good for the kids. We know they are having to give up their school and its not good for them.

This is a opportunity for our community to come together and get behind our school and make this a good thing outta something not so good. Its for the best of all the kids.

The deal isn't done, and there is no plan to do anything. Where did you get this information from? The Monticello Board of Education voted to seek State management, and to start discussion with the Kentucky Department of Education and Wayne County School about the possibility of a merger between the two districts. The Kentucky Department of Education will recommend that the schools consolidate! Not that Wayne County will absorb Monticello schools!

to come together and get behind our school

How can you come together, when people such as yourself make statements like this? If the shoe was on the other foot, you would be tooting a different horn. The reason Wayne County was bailed out several years ago is because they're a county school district. Each county must have a school district, therefore the bailout. Monticello Schools just needs to raise their tax rates like Wayne County, and everything will be alright for all involved.

Si says; Hey, Monticello will be saved from consolidation by the State helping them with their budget, and that's a fact, Jack!

seems that adults need to leave the bickering alone and let the officials get down to business of putting the kids into the one school. this is for the benefit of ALL that includes the "adults" who continue to want to raise cain and stir trouble with the merge, consolidation or whatever the chosen word is at this time. It is simply my hope that all things can be worked out to the mutual benefit of the students.
It does sound like the Monticello board made some mistakes but we all knew or felt this was coming for years so now it has arrived. Lets get it done and go on down the road. There are lots of hurdles to overcome..lets work on those and not each other.
