Ok people! If you REALLY don't want these labs next door to you then KEEP THIS AT THE TOP!

Step 1: Educate yourself on what to look for.

Step 2: Do not fear reporting what you find. It doesn't make you a "rat" it makes you the guardian angel to nearby children, the elderly, and people just like you.

Step 3: Do step 1 by reading the following:

What are signs of a meth lab?
A typical meth lab is a collection of chemical bottles, hoses, and pressurized cylinders. The cylinders can take many forms, from modified propane tanks to fire extinguishers, scuba tanks and soda dispensers. The tanks contain anhydrous ammonia or hydrochloric acid ? both highly poisonous and corrosive.

Labs are frequently abandoned, and the potentially explosive and very toxic chemicals are left behind. Chemicals may also be burned or dumped in woods or along roads.

The most common chemicals used to start the meth-making process are over-the-counter cold and asthma medications which contain ephedrine or pseudoephedrine as decongestants or stimulants.

Here are signs of a meth lab:

* Unusual strong chemical odors such as ether, ammonia (smell similar to cat urine) and acetone (smells similar to fingernail polish)
* Excess amounts of cold medicines containing Ephedrine or pseudoephedrine * Empty pill bottles or blister packs
* Propane/Freon tanks with blue corrosion on fittings or spray-painted or burned, with bent or tampered valves
* Starting fluid cans opened from the bottom
* Heating sources such as hotplates/torches
* Excess coffee filters
* Excess baggies
* Excess matches
* Excess lithium batteries
* Cookware (Corning type) with white residue
* Glassware, Mason jars or other glass containers
* Plastic tubing
* Funnels
* Hoses leading outside for ventilation
* Soft drink bottles with hoses running from them
* Drain cleaner, paint thinner, toluene, denatured alcohol, ammonia, acid, starter fluid, antifreeze, hydrogen peroxide, rock salt/iodine
* Lantern or camp stove fuel
* Iodine- or chemical-stained bathrooms or kitchen fixtures
* Evidence of chemical waste or dumping
* Excessive amounts of trash, particularly chemical containers, coffee filters with red stains, duct tape rolls, Empty cans of or paint thinner or pieces of red-stained cloth around the property
* Secretive or unfriendly occupants
* Extensive security measures or attempts to ensure privacy such as "No Trespassing" or "Beware of Dog" signs, fences, and large trees or shrubs
* Curtains always drawn or windows blackened or covered with aluminum foil on residences, garages, sheds, or other structures
* Increased activity, especially at night
* Frequent visitors, particularly at unusual times
* Renters who pay their landlords in cash

Could the city garbage collectors be of help? Shouldn't they be educated in what to spot? I know they are busy, but if they pick up garbage that smells really strongly of ammonia and the house shows some of the other signs, shouldn't they be able to radio in and ask someone to check out this persons garbage? They could be in danger from all this stuff in the garbage! And if it is on the side of the street to be picked up, isn't it ok to check it out? Our friendly garbage collectors might be an excellent resource!

How do the people making it keep from getting sick? Do clothes and hair smell after you have been making with a chemical smell?

What about Kerosene? Seen a bunch of men packing alot of kerosene and heaters in the middle of summer once, it was probably 90degrees. I thought it was weird considering the time and the heat.

People on meth loose alot of weight, most people look better when they loose weight, but they dont.
Also their skin looks different sometimes having sores or may look like acne, it also over time will effect their teeth.

No one that exposes a meth lab is a rat. What these people are making isn't really methamphetamine, but something you could compare to bath tub gin during prohibition. An impure compound that's very hazardous. The people making this stuff probably didn't graduate high school let alone know much of anything about chemistry. Hence why the people on the stuff have sores and boils popping out everywhere.

alot of the things posted on this thread about meth are not exactly right.... but I do know that if you have a meth lab around you, you can tell by the smell, and it dont smell like cat urine. It smells more like burning plastic. When a meth lab is created, the person has to vent the tanks, and that makes an odor that is noticable for quite a ways, some have figured out ways to filter the vent fumes to make them less noticable. if they do not vent them enough... they will explode. and the heaters have nothing to do with it, heat dont make the stuff, its meth.... not crack cocaine. you have to mix the chemicals in a container that u can control the pressure in, and a chemical reaction takes place within a day or two causing they chemicals to crystalize. then the crystals are scrapped from the container. just about all meth is made using matches, it contains the phosphorus needed. people that smoke dont use matches most of the time.... so people that buy alot of matches are probably involved with meth making. Some of the people around here have been going into the edge of the woods and making meth in barrels. So watch for people that go into the woods frequently, and are only gone for a few hours.

Thank you very much for this i have lost my best friend to this evil drug because they were not awhere that they were living in a home with a meth lab.they were innocent victim of how the once that are using this meth get so heart less and don't care who they hurt or kill just as long as they get thier meth.and even if they do cause someone to die they will just keep on making there dope and never even bat a eye about that they caused a innocent person to die.they don't care if you are there mom,dad,kids,brother,or sister,grandkid or what they will make this around you or in your home and you have to suffer or even die because the are as cold hearted as it gets.

what about them making it in the woods can they use gas jugs,kerosene jugs,and on the smell it just depends on what they are using to make it sometimees it will smell like rotten eggs,eather,varnish remover but it just depends if you smell any kind of strong oder then you need to watch cause that is a good sign that it's possible theres one around.

Also you need to watch if you have someone that is on oxygen then you need to watch and keep count of there hoses because they can be used to make meth.

Sorry not ALL Meth is made with " Matches "....Meth that is made with " Matches " is called Red Phosphurous Meth or
RED P...The other kind is made with Anhydrous Ammonia.. This is one of the best threads I've seen on Topix... Something else too look for that I didn't see in the original post are Gas Jugs with rubber hoses coming out of them... IF YOU SEE THIS LEAVE IT ALONE!!!!! DO NOT PICK IT UP!!! CALL LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT!!!! It contains very toxic chemical fumes inside it that can hospitalize you or cause death... In the original post I did see too look for Starting Fluid.... If you see these starting fluid cans, look on the bottom of them and look for a puncture hole..Try not to pick it up to look at it, just move it around a little with your foot to where you can see the bottom... Also if you suspect something wierd in a mason jar or any container.. DO NOT OPEN IT AND SMELL IT!!!!!! Annhydrous ammonia can and WILL Crystalize your lungs in a second... Most of what you've seen on here are true facts about Meth labs...Some of it is not so true..but for the most part yes.. I know the facts on this because I was an expert witness in Meth LAb Cases, I have the proper training to dismantle them through Quanico with the DEA.... and I also have had the priveledge of taking down over 100 Meth Labs and removing SEVERAL children from these homes... This epidemic NEEDS TO BE STOPPED!!!! I'm sure I speak for the original poster of this thread and myself when I say, We will answer any question you have if we can... I will for sure... The only thing I won't tell is how too make it!!! If you suspect someone of making this crap around you just look for the signs posted so far...Also the smells... A lot of times Meth cooks will cause a distraction smell to cover the smell of their lab, like burning trash or just tree leaves or anything that will smell, but if you smell anything that smells like :(1) Finger Nail Polish remover,(2)Starting fluid,(3) any wierd chemical smell..Call the Police immediately...

Also you need to watch for them
burning stuff

like back packs,

buffle bags

and having several
burn spots on the property

also alot of traffic bringing in store bags of stuff

several vehicles that come late at night

packing stuff to out buildings in houses,

alot of gas jugs with no lids

and if someone is living with a meth lab or it's ingredients they may also get sores onn them and it's not always that they are using meth some people are allergic to the stuff they make it with and that will cause them to have sores on them and them have not every used it or mad it.

if you start having trouble breathing and stopped up like you have a real bad chest cold or coughing like you have smokers cough then it could be caused by a meth lab being around you

some of them will keep staph infection

they will pick at there sore and eat the scabes so they get high again from that

they will complain about bugs crawling on them
but it's nothing there they call this meth crabs or meth lice not for sure.

Since it hasn't been mentioned. People tweaking on meth usually have dilated pupils and look kinda sweaty. Some people you can even smell the stuff coming out of their pours.
