But they've tried the dollar coins before. Like the Susan B. Anthony gold dollar. Everyone hated them because they made them too much like a quarter. They might last but they sure tarnish fast. Then they turn ugly. I know I have given them to stores thinking they were a quarter because they would be missing from my purse. I hope they have a more distinctive look. If they do that, will the paper dollars be worthless, or will people hoard them away for collectors items? The financial instutions will turn them in to the gov. to be burned. Oh what a horrible sight! lol!

There's been a replacement since 2000 and it's just as popular.

Also, this is a proposal. Seems lately everyone has been running with these vague suggestions on how to cut the deficit as if they've already been issued, passed, and put into legislation.

Exactly. It is the nature of the non-thinker to bite onto sensationalist stories, take them at more than face value, and spread them around to get others riled up.
Anyway, back on topic, paper $1s are stupid, as are pennies (due to zinc rising insanely in the past 10 years). But even if those changes were implemented, the total savings over 10 years isn't even close to the savings we could get in a single year if we stopped the military-industrial abuse of our tax dollars (for example). I'm far too realistic to expect that, though, so they may as well start doing away with dumb forms of currency.

I'm going to agree whole heartily with you one that one. The biggest waste in tax money is the absurd amount going to the defense budget. I'm not saying cut the program, but I feel 711 billion dollars is a little excessive and puts us at the top world for the biggest military budget. China coming in second at 143 billion.(568 billion difference)

Wish I had proof read that... I think you understand what I'm saying.
