A little advice to who ever it may help. We all know that things are tough .
But you have to distinguish yourself from the pack. I recently just advertised for 4 employees on line. I had over 400 applications. Here's some tips.
a)Apply on line if you must...but go see the possible employer face to face if you can. Your on-line resume' looks like everyone else's...."GREAT TEAM PLAYER, WILLING TO GO THE EXTA MILE", etc..Making an effort to meet the employer will distinguish you from the rest of the on line app's.
b)Dont dress like your going to the "club". No matter what the position that you are looking to obtain..wear a clean dress shirt . Often you will be interviewed by someone that's a generation or two older than you. That person doesn't know the differance between "cool" and gangsta... no employer want a gangsta.
c)Try to articulate yourself well. If this is a challenge for you..than try to limit the "aints" and "yeahs" and make them "am nots" and "yes". By the way "yes sir" and "no maam" wont hurt.
d)if you get a "face to face" interview..be 15 minutes early....your punctuality will be percieved by your employer as a "snap shot" of what you would be like as an employee.
_-be honest and before you leave the interview..look the employer straight in the eye and say" I know that you have lots of people looking to land the position and you and i dont really know each other. But I can promise you that i'm a hard working, honest and reliable person who would love working for your company and if i get the chance to work here... you would come to love me as an employee as well.
And if you get hired...than work like it!
It wont necessarily get you a job on your next interview (there are some crappy bosses) but one day it will.

I was in Americorps and worked for less but earned a grant for collage. I worked along side of the kids in youthbuild and i learned a lot. You must of not been paying much attention. Better luck next time, for you.

When you call and check your application status this shows the employer that you are interested in the business.
Do u really want a job

I agree with Airplane that checking on the status of the application does help to distinguish you from the pack...you may or may not get the job but it does show at least "the image" that you really want to work.
A VERY HIGH percentage of people that apply on-line for a job aren't really looking to get off the couch and really start a job.
They apply on-line for a host of reasons: get mommy and daddy "off their back" and/or to show that they are making an effort so as to keep unemployment benefits coming. But maybe the biggest reason that they apply is that-it doesnt take much to put down the X-BOX for 1-hour and play around on the computer .
If i have 100 on line applications and thru review i decide to call 15 of those candidates for an interview , i promise you that of the 15 candidates that i call or e-mail trying to set up an interview ,at least 40% will be un-reachable.
More tips-if you apply on line, make sure that whoever's e-mail adress you use (yours or someone else's) is regularly checked. Many times i will e-mail a candidate to set up an interview but they dont reply..3 weeks latter they call me(after i have already hired someone) to explain that it was either thier girl friend/boy friends e-mail adress or that it was their adress but they hadnt checked it in some time.
Also ... be smart about your e-mail adress itself.
If im hiring someone as a representative of my Co....its only natural that i'm going to be a little hesitant when i see that your e-mail adress is "backdoorman069"...n ot that i personally think thats a bad deal..but i will question what kind of "common sense" that person has for sure.

They are a joke. Look at the other properties they have purchased and nothing done with them. Its a tax write off scam.
