The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as the stimulus, became law three years ago this week, signed by President Obama less than a month into his presidency. At the time, financial and housing crises had plunged the American economy into a deep recession — in January 2009, the economy lost more than 800,000jobs, more than in any single month in 60 years.

With its investments into infrastructure projects, tax cuts, and aid to states, the stimulus was designed to curb the effects of the recession and turn the economy back around. Though Republicans have criticized the effort and subsequent attempts to stimulate the economy as “failed policies,” early analysis has shown that the stimulus saved and created millions of jobs and pulled the American economy away from the precipice of collapse.

In a new analysis, Center for American Progress Director for Tax and Budget Policy Michael Linden examined the American economy in three parts — before the recession, during the recession, and after the stimulus passed — to find out if the stimulus did, indeed, work. As the video below shows, there is no doubt that the stimulus turned the economy around and put it on the path to recovery:

Last summer the conservatives voted 100% to amend the clean water act. It would have allowed states to decide for themselves what level of clean water they wanted.
The results of mountain top removal is horrific in eastern ky. The devastation would be worse with the removal of oversight by the FDA.

Key Facts

The rate of children born with birth defects is 42% higher in mountaintop removal mining areas.

People living near mountaintop mining have cancer rates of 14.4% compared to 9.4% for people elsewhere in Appalachia.

The public health costs of pollution from coal operations in Appalachia amount to a staggering $75 billion a year.

Can you imagine the health effects on children by removing the small barrier of safety they have left. The Clean Water Act and the oversight of the FDA.

Those same contaminates that kill will or have leached into the ground water and seeped into rivers to be carried to others outside of the mining areas as well.

Keep the conservatives out. They are feeding like hogs at the troughs of big corporations.

But Rand Paul is good and Ron Paul is good too.
What did your Obama and the rest of this his administration do to improve this situation? Nothing. They continue global mess of bush.
Maybe giving chance for another people (it means not Romney, Gingrich, Santorum,)- normal republicans just like R.R Pauls are will bring improvement in your country.

I know that Obama has been fighting against what the conservatives want to do, get rid of the EPA. They are our line of defense against corporate pollution. Obama is also trying to support green alternatives of energy to help stop or slow the amount of coal mining. Rand and Ron Paul want to get rid of the EPA and would allow mining companies to pollute at will. The rates of disabilities and death would shoot up astronomically.
These children with disabilities would grow up needing medical assistance but would not be able to receive any if the conservatives had their way. Preexisting conditions would not be covered by insurance. Therefore, medicaid would have to fill the financial gap. And that gap would be huge. Of course the conservatives want to get rid of medicaid too.

The problem with Rand is that he can't see what is really happening right in front of him. He doesn't think Kentucky has a meth problem or a pill problem. When he said it was all a made up problem I have to wonder what kind of magical world he lives in.

The 'conservatives' as one has put it, do NOT want to eliminate all EPA's. The ones that want to shutter the Federal EPA want to leave such duties & authority to the states. In keeping with this being a FEDERAL REPUBLIC ! Just as the founding fathers & THE Constitution rules.
We ALL want to minumize toxins, pollutions, nasty air etc. I am sure that I am not alone with that.

I barely know where to start with this 'blinders on tripe' that you penned but here goes. As far as the stimulus working, WE borrowed just short of a trillion dollars from a country that hasn't had a kind word or deed for the U.S. since 1946 even tho WE helped greatly to free them from the Imperialist Japanese. The Chinese that won't free Tibet, want to arrest the Dali Lahma, execute more political prisoners than EVERY country in the world. The support the despotic regime of N.Korea, knocked down one of our aircraft a few years ago in international airspace & then held the aircraft until the anylized all that they could. They pirate books, CD's, DVD's & whatever else with NO regard for copyright & patent laws.
They have helped N.Korea & Iran develope nuculear weapons, threaten Tiawan & Nepal. Have fought wars with Veitnam & India & many more. They pollute more than any other country because they have NO EPA of any sort. In a way they have 'loaned us' money that they got from us by selling us low cost pirated goods with lead paint, low quality & toxic pet foods etc with some of the most underpaid labor in the world.
NOW the U,S. is indebted to them. That's not exactly something to brag about.
Then there are the reports (some are the CBO's #'s) that jobs earning $30,000-$50,000 cost $100,000 & more of stimulus dollars to save. What stupid tripe There are more people on section 8 & food stamps than EVER B4. Why is that if everything is getting better?
Then there is the FACT that O called Bush "unpatriotic" with a 4trillion deficit in EIGHT years when he has MORE than matched that in just 3 years!!
He has played over 80 rnds of golf in 3 yrs while many complained of Bush playing something like 50 in 8 yrs. He & his family have had 19 official vacations in 3 yrs. That's one every 8 weeks.
I am running out of room so I will close by saying; I have been a registered Independent for OVER 30 years. I have voted for both parties & 3rd party in my lifetime. AND I am NOT a recist. I don't like Obama's black 1/2 or his white 1/2.

I don't have any particular love for Rand or Ron. But Leslie's post was so narrow minded about NoBama that I had to chime in. I am somewhat mystified at the 'Pied Piper' skills of the current White House tenent. Some have it & some don't. Amazing. It seems that when some people are hungry, they will not wait for the real food but will go after the manure as soon as it is spread.

what i heard from him was that he said that he thought its the state's job to deal with the states problems and not the feds. Ky does have a meth and pill problem so do other states.

The Kentucky meth problem is so bad not even federal money is stopping it. Just how do you expect the commonwealth to stop it? Rand said it was blown out of proportion and the state could handle it. That will never happen. There is no way to stop it with just state money. Besides, Kentucky sends money to the federal government, they deserve some of it back to deal with the problem.

The drug problem won't be solved because it is too addicting, and takes to long to kill it's victims. Like a Zombie movie, they just drone on and on, stealing and killing to get a fix for the next day. We would be better off killing them. That's what they do in Zombie movies.

I strongly suggest that the prescriptions be better tracked from the maker to the pharmacy & compared to the written prescriptions.
ALL of this can be done electronically. When discrepencies are found, the appropraite enforcement agency can be called in to investigate & enforce the law. Every dealer & doper will not be caught but a hugh dent can be made & lives saved.
