Duke customers, watch them they ripped us off on our $240 deposit we have been trying to get it back since the end of oct 06, Now we really need it as the work i do has went to almost nothing. The man my wife talked to was very RUDE to her, I wish he had been in front of me when he did that to her!!!!!!!!!! He would be picking his ass up off the floor. And now they say they cant go back that far, they told us someone will get back with us in 10 days.....are you joking just cause they are a big business they think they can do customers like that? Well we got a few more days and if they dont call or if they do call and say we cant get our deposit back till we terminate service then we are going to file a complaint with the Indiana Attorney Generals Office!!!!! I bet they do something about it then and maybe have a law suit to go with that, for i will be talking to an attorney. I have dealt with the Attorney Generals Office Many times and have always came away happy for they do protect their citizens of Indiana!!

what i really appreciate about duke... how they kick u when ur down. get behind on a bill with this company and then they add even more to your current charges. with an explanation of due to your por credit rating we are charging u an addtional 300.00 that will sit an a fund and draw interest..lol..lol..lol... if people are behind on thier bills does duke really think they can come up with additional funds...what a sad company this is. whats even sadder is that our government allows them to operate and raise their rates in this econmy, when the people r struggling. cant wait for solar to be on everyones homes and duke to go bankrupt...what a glorious day that will be...

I too have been trying to get my $200 deposit back that Duke Energy has had for over two years. I have faxed, emailed, talked to them on the phone (after holding for over 20 minutes off and on) and nothing...and you are so right, miss a utility bill and they will threaten to cut you off in a heartbeat. What's worse - they have you over a barrel because you can't power anyplace else!

If anything works for somebody out there...please share!

I recently got ripped off majorly.

They sent a notice claiming we only owed a bill of a little over $500. This was already a naturally absurd bill considering we're a lower income family and are on their payment plan, but still, we paid it, and the recording said our next payment was not due until November 1st.

The very next day, someone came to our house early in the morning and told us we still owed $300. We argued with him and with people on the phone. Not only did they shut it off, but that $300 we owed skyrocketed to a whopping $700, saying we owed the entire backpayment to get it back on. When told we knew nothing of the additional $300, they said they 'sent another notice out' which we conviniently did not receive BEFORE the power was shut off (go figure.) When told the phone recording said we had until November 1st to make our next payment, they told us "that was wrong." Duke Energy effectively mislead us, and I'm just wondering if that's against the law or not.

Now, let's add all this up -$700 plus the $500 we had to pay -$1200. For the $500 alone we wasted on these liars, we could have spent a month with family and lived rather comfortable. For the full 800 they expected us to pay, we could have spent a number of days in a cheap motel with free wifi effectively cutting a lot of costs. For the full 1200, we could have done that and bought a new computer.

If you can find an alternative to Duke Energy (and I do believe they exist) go for it, because these people are sick, and they have NO qualms about cutting your power - they'll even cut you off on Christmas morning!

Complaining to PUCO will do no good, they are in Duke's back pocket! Trust me, I've tried. I hate duke energy more than any other utility company out there.
Our meter reader continuously estimates our readings very high. Sure they get corrected, but if you ever sell your home and potential buyers check the energy bills, they still see the high bill instead of the corrected ones, lost a sale of our previous home to this. Duke sucks!!!!!!
Also, it does you no good to shop for competitive rates for gas or electric, because duke just tacks on their higher charges and up goes your bill!

Also complain to your congressman and both senators.

If your meter is inside you have to let them get in to read it.

There is no excuse for estimated bills if your meters are outdoors.

Give 'em hell dude!

Duke is a scam. I have caught them not coming to read the meter for 6 months. Last Christmas, they said I owed a whopping $700+ on a 1 bedroom trailer. I caught the (DUKE energy accurate meter reader) truck outside one day.# months ago, my bill quadrupled and was over $200/month. Im not stupid. I knew they had not read the meter because there was un disturbed snow all around the meter for 3 months.
I scheduled a reading, and they never bothered to show up. But bothered to slip a disconnection notice on my door and run away. So, they will come by to give a blue slip, but absolutely refuse to read the meter. WTF? The customer service is worthless. They are all 17 year old kids. They will continually hang up on you. Here I am, 4 months after scheduling a accurate reading, and havent seen them yet. Take pics of your bill with the guessed numbers, and your meter. Then sue them. They get sued all the time. No big deal. It is illegal in Indiana to guestimate and cut you off for a gustimation. Against the law anywhere really. Duke has zones. And they judge the accounts by your neighborhood. If you live in a bad neighborhood, you are going to pay 4x sometimes. They absolutely refuse to come and read my meter. Even with dozens of calls and requests to come read my meter. Dont call duke, catch them and sue them. It's easy.

I have had Duke Energy for 16 years. When I got my first apartment in 1996 I paid a 175 deposit. Since that time I've moved a few times..I bought my first home. I aslo moved when I relocated with my job. With each move I had my power transfered. It has always been in my name. Last year I went thru a divorce and I've been in a rented house for a year and a half now. Well... two months ago I got a letter in the mail from Duke saying that the wasn't a deposit on my account to secure payment so I would be charged an additional $250 on my next bill. Ok wait a minute where is the deposit from 16 years ago...applied to my bill in 2000 they said...hmm I don't remmember that at all. Well why now? Why after moving & tranfering service over a year ago...why now charge me a deposit. There answer shocked me and made me feel like they a heartless money grubbers. They sai that I was never required to pay a deosit since 2000 because I paid my bill on time BUT they reviewed my payment history over the last 12 months & I consistently have paid my bill late. Well.......excuse me Duke but have u noticed that the economy sucks. Gas is high & unemployment is on the rise. I was never disconnected by the grace of God but late yes. I didn't have the money to pay on time B now they are treatening to cut it off if I don't pay the deposit. As soon as they sent the notice the deposit was past due. Any money paid on my bill would be applied to the deposit first.... idk why they act like I wouldn't pay my bill anyway. I mean what's the alternative... NONE. Duke is the monopoly. There is no where else to go yet they act as if you gonna skip out leaving them to foot the bill....not! They always get there way. This has to stop.

Duke provides citizens with great clean electric and service. Yes they need your deposits so they can draw the interest from it, that way they can be assured that the CEO James Rogers gets his 20-30 million dollar bonus every year. Please, if you can, send in many deposits. We can't allow his family to starve!

Some pretty ugly stories folks. The best advice is to keep your records, a log of phone calls & the result of each call & then go to PUCO & then your repesentative. YES, this can take quite some time but it sounds like there M.O. is twofold, take advantage of people that don't have good records & to wear everyone down that they can.
I would guess that they usually win. Sorry folks.

Not that this post will make a difference, but i am doing it anyway./about a month ago my checking account got hacked. so the bank and i shut it down. My account was up to date except for a few missed dollars. that carries over from month to month. Now they sent me a bill in december they will cut my power leaving me and my family in a potentially in a cold house. I have been paying Duke for 20 years and have never been extremely late, Although things do happen i have always paid my dues. The fees at Duke power are absurd I can only imagine how much revenue they pull in each month from threatening citizens to cut there power, It is a Big sin to leave anyone out in the cold, I bet they would even cut the power to a war veteran whom has fallen on hard times. A person whom has given there life to protect the freedoms of others. They should be ashamed. If you are continuously late you need to work on that but i would never expect and huge multi billion dollar company to do such things. So i payed the 550 like they said i owed but asked them what have they done with the original deposit that i paid 20 yrs ago? So duke power you are being watched by the citizens of our country. Just do the right thing and return these folks there money. And do not charge such rediculous amounts for deposits. We are your customers do us right. It is unfortunate they we have no other source of electric or a choice of anther company...

Like so many posts on here, I have had bad experiences with Duke.. the lastest was when they disconnected my power on a Friday night. Did not discover this until after hours. When I called their 24 hour number, I found out that my payment had posted that day but they did not cancel the disconnect. They told me no one could turn it back on til the next business day (Monday Am) because service worker do not wrok after 5pm. Well, They never showed Monday. I called when I got home(6pm). They finally got someone out there at 9pm...I thought to myself..What happened to the statment they made about no service worker after 5pm...They are a Monopoly of Corporate pigs that have absolutly no concern about the customers they serve..All about the money I guess.

I suggest that you Write a registered letter to the PUCO or e-mail them if you would rather do that. Supply as much time dated material as you can.
Keep records of every communication with Duke & PUCO.

I got let go today from duke for no reason..all they said was "my services are no longer needed". Honestly I'm glad to be gone from this place. They are scum! They pay there last employees 200000 a year and there hard workers 20000 a year. Most employees are high paid, hence the electric rates! Full of yes sir management..they claim to be huge on safety but only if your in there vehicle. This way if no injuries they get there huge bonuses. They make us drive in while the weather is at its worst then when we get there they say we don't want anyone going out till it's safe because we care about all of you....really is because if we get injured on the clock there bonuses are hurt. I don't have any job in the future but still glad to be gone.....
