Does the republicans in congress still have their mojo by Johnny Appleseedon the Oswego Forum....Sunday, January 20, 2013
It appears that the repubican congress has lost its Mojoe and is being whipped around like a toothless dog by Obama and the leftist democrats unable or unwilling to put up a fight on any issue that comes up.
Conservatives and independents such as the members of the Tea Party said loudly, by their votes, that they didn't want the democrats in control of both the Senate and the House as well as the presidency when they voted to put the republicans in control of the House. The voters did this with good reason, to put in place a counterbalance to the raw power that the democrat party had when they were in control of both Houses and the presidency.
But the republicans since then have laspted into a state of funk,a resignation to being powerless to the wills of Obama and the democrats and have apparently forgotten that they have a tool in their bag which former congress members have used quite effectively to exert the powers assigned to them by the constitution, That is the power of the purse. I give as an example when this country was inolved in the Vietnam war ...Democrats in control of congress cut off funding for the Vietnam War. "What happened when Democrats in congress cut off funding for the Vietnam war."
"Historians have directly attributed the fall of Saigon in 1975 to the cessation of American aid. Without the necessary funds, South Vietnam found it logistically and financially impossible to defeat the North Vietnamese army. Moreover, the withdrawal of aid encouraged North Vietnam to begin an effective military offensive against South Vietnam. Given the monetary and military investment in Vietnam, former Assistant Secretary of State Richard Armitage compared the American withdrawal to “a pregnant lady, abandoned by her lover to face her fate." " Historian Lewis Fanning went so far as to say that “it was not the Hanoi communists who won the war, but rather the American Congress that lost it."
And then more recently the democrat members said that if they won control of the 110th Congress they would cut off funding for the Iraq war...Given control of the purse strings, a Democratic Congress would be in the position to force the government to begin the withdrawal of troops. Although they have been hesitant to define their plan for Iraq, some Democrats have hinted at a drastic reduction in funds. When asked in a recent interview how a Democratic Congress could stop the war, Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), who is set to chair the Ways and Means Committee should the Democrats win the majority, precociously answered,“You’ve got to be able to pay for the war, don’t you?”
So the republican congress is faced with a democrat president who is determined to overrun and deny congress its lawful powers granted to it by the constitution by the use of executive orders and end-runs around congress, Congress needs to fulfill the duties of its office its charged to carry out and deny funding for Obama's legislation by executive orders and by fiat.
Its time for the republican Congress to show that it still has its mojo, still has the ability to get in the fight.
