Like some of the other people said. The crime rate has been up in the last two years. but you can always find something to do especially if you are into theatre, dance, arts, stuff like that. I f you get bored, Birmingham is an hour away,Atlanta(2 hours), Gulf shores and florida( beaches), Mississippi(3 hours) casinos, but we have a few here in the surrounding areas. The clubs depending on what kind of music you like have things going on all the time. for all types around Montgomery. The Thursday paper has a GO! Section in it and it tells all of the happenings for the weekend at clubs and bars. Live music, We always have artists coming to perform. I t really depends on the kind of person you are. Homebody or Club body. lol. Every one is different when it comes to living somewhere. some adapt and some don't and always find something to complain about instead of moving. I have lived here all 28 years of my life and i make the best of it. The cost of living is pretty good even with the 10% sales tax. If you are making $30K or more you are considered ok as far as making ends meet here. It also depends on the side of town you are living on or visit. So its what you make it. There are friendly people here. me being one of them.Private schools are good. One of our magnet schools got Blue ribbon School of Excellence 2007. Some of the schools are trying to do what they can. One of our public school has achieved Torchbearer School for 2 years Which means it is given to schools with high poverty and the kids academics are very high.So its only what you make it and what you like to do.

I would recommend looking into houwing in Wetumpka, Elmore County. There are quite a few active and retired AF. It's on higheay 31 and closer to Gunter but not a bad commute to Maxwell. It's been 10 years since we lived there but at that time the public High School Building had just opened. My sone faired ok there, but wasn't a motivated student. There is a private school out that way as well, Edgewood Acacemy.
This will put you even closer to the Lakes and has a lot of family orientated activites such as 4th of July river side fireworks and Christmas of the Coosa lighted boat parade. Oh, the not to miss event is the New Years ball drop. The Divines, local business owners, lower a orb of christmas lits down the Court house flag pole. Complete with candle lighting to honor the Military branches family members have served in and Benny Goodwin sound track playing on portable speakers. I loved it.

I love these replies because I tell the truth. You can expect a crappy police force and no law and order. You expect blacks, all over the place. you expec5t rudeness and disrespect anywhere you go. Montgomery sucks. Alabama Sucks. I get so sick and tired of people smiling and saying how great it is here. it is crap. This town is the epitomy of low-income, welfare majoritym cesspool.

i tell the truth also. i am a black female and like i said it depends on where in town you stay and/or the if u are in prattvilee, wetumpka, millbrook or close by. What's so wrong with blacks all over the place anyway? I dont see why if someone hates a city so much, why not move then. If you hate it so much, then u need to try to make the best of it while u are here. You can always find something to do whether it is in Montgomery, Alabama or the surrounding cities and states. I work with people everyday and you vaughrdgirl are the kind who are just the ones with bad attitudes about everything. Me. im going to try to make the best out of a bad situation and try to get out of it if necessary.even if it is a city i hate or blacks or whites that i hate. but i hate no one. life is too short for that crap so i suggest u get out and get and life and try to make the best of whats left of it, missy.

I visited Montgomery last week and the best area i liked was in Prattville and Millbrook mainly because of the schools east Montgomery was nice to, there were many nice neighborhoods to choose from, but since i have school age kids i will most likely live north of Maxwell.

I can speak for personal experience. I have lived in Montgomery for 24 years since I was two. The schools suck, it is now majorty black. Iím not a racist just stating the facts. ďA lot of blacksĒ in Montgomery are different classes of people, i.e. less educated people are normally your poorer ones hence ignorant. We have a lot of that here. If you meet someone that lived in Montgomery and moved to Prattville, ask them why they moved, If there honest they will tell you. So the point of the story is move to Prattville. We thought we could move far enough northeast to get away from them. Yet, we have something down Section 8 Housing, look it up. I was in the military so I have been around and this is the only city Iíve seen like this.

If you were moving to Nashville, you could expect the police here to hate you and the large number of sex offenders and pedophiles here to prey on you and your family. This is the sex offender/pedophile capital of the world

I don't know what Air Force you are a member of, but you sound like a true racist to me. I'm white and I was born and raised here, I also served 24 years in the United States Air Force and you are a total disgrace in my opinion. Why don't you go to your commmander and tell him that you can't be stationed here because it's not compatible with your taste. Besides, we don't want you here anyway. Go back to Colorado or where ever you came from. We don't need comments like yours about our state and our people, black or white. I just hope you come here with that attitude and let "Monkey Town" or any other comments you use slip in the wrong place. You'll see then what being in the South is all about.
You make me sick! You are supposedly in the Air Force and going where they need you to go, but you've got to get on a public forum like this and cuss us, before you ever even have a chance to experience what this area has to offer. If you had any guts at all, you would use your real name. I'm Tim Jones in Prattville, you come see me and I'll set you straight mister. You've got it all wrong about the South. I've lived in Colorado, Texas, and several other countries and I loved everywhere I was stationed. I appreciated the opportunity to tour the world while serving my country. Maybe you should look for a new profession since you are so unhappy with the one you are in now.

You're retired which means you're not in the military anymore which means your rank doesn't mean squat anymore. Go polish your medals and salute yourself in the mirror because nobody cares about what you think or say.

The area is the Redland Community. New Elementary school as of 2010. It is a really nice area. I can't tell you about the school itself as I don't have any small children. My husband was in the A.F. stationed at Maxwell. We stayed here after he retired. Property taxes are extremely affordable. We own 2450 sq. ft. older house with nearly 2 acres and a pool that we are selling if you are interest email me at itsjustv@hotmail.com and I will send pictures. I think anyone would say we have the most beautiful spring colors in this entire area!

I know I'm a few years late with my comments, but I had to say something. I find it interesting that people will get on these types forum and say whatever they want, but in public they act as though we're all one big happy family. CMSgt Timothy Jones, I appreciate your comments. I am also in the military and I go where the Army needs me; sometimes good and sometimes not so good, but I can tell you this, it's always what I make of it. I just left Southern Cali and contrary to popular belief, I was not happy. I graduated from Alabama State University many years ago and yeah I've too noticed a change. But unlike some of the comments on this forum, I realize that things doesn't always stay the same and most of it can be rooted to political interest. Did we believe 25 years ago that Montgomery would stay the same when everyone and their money was moving east and neglecting the west? Poor blacks and whites have always lived in Montgomery, AL like any other city or state. But if you're smart and have the money, you'd buy land in West Montgomery and sit on it for while and watch what happens.

Montgomery is nice enough but stay away from Prattville. It has an International Papermill and the smell is terrible. The city didn't even monitor the mill emissions when we unfortunately moved here and I doubt if they are doing so now. Keep your children's lungs as far away from there as possible.Don't let anyone tell you it's not that bad - you'll get used to it. We have been here for over 10 years and the smell makes it hard to breathe and makes us prone to migraines. Don't make the same mistake that we made. Stay away from Prattville.

VISITNG FROM OHIO I FIND THE PEOPLE WARM, POLITE, AND HELPFUL. I NOTICE WHITE AND BLACKS WORKING TOGETHER AND GETTING ALONG. REALLY THE RACIAL CLIMATE IS BETTER THAN IN OHIO. BEAUTIFUL SUB-DIVISIONS. I LIKE THE AUBURN=ALABAMA RIVALTRY AND THE DEVOTION PEOPLE HAVE TO THEIR ALMA MATERS.

It's not Monkey Town it's Gump City. I spent 30 days living in Montgomery last year and it's nothing but dope fiends and gumps.

So glad I live here in Prattville/Pine Level now. Prattville/Pine Level is the spot where you want to live but you have to have money to live out here It's not cheap.

The community is great and it has very little crime compared to the other cities.
