How the heck to people get in wonderwood? I' was turned down. when i went there yesterday that woman wasn't there but a older man was. he was like, you got job? do you have a criminal record? I dont have a job and yes i have a criminal record. he told me his manager makes all decisions and he backs her up. I asked if he works there to and he said no, i own the place and i dont like squatters on my property. dont they give people the benfit of the doubt there we all deserve a second chance.

Don't you have anyone you can stay with till you get on your feet? Surely some good friends or family would help you out for a while if you could do some things around the house etc. You don't want to settle up and get stuck in a slum like wonderwood. Sorry but it's true. Also it may do you more good to be looking for work in Cookeville. Check the classifieds for starters.

If you do not have a job, and you DO have a criminal record, WHY should you be surprised to get turned down? It's the way things are. It takes a while to rebuild your reputation if you mess up (and get a criminal record). If you have people who know you SOMEWHERE they should be able to help you unless for some reason they are reluctant to do so.

Wonderwood is NOT a "slum". Have you lived there before?

That is ENTIRELY up to you, wherever you live, what your expectations are, what YOU do to change things, and how much you are able to actually appreciate a helping hand with your living expenses. There are some lovely people living there!

No. I should have said it's more like a European hostel. Poor choice of words on my part.

It's easy to tell the people on here bashing Wonderwood are either people they have evicted or made mad for whatever reason.
I've been here 8 years and I've always kept to myself and not bothered anyone. I do have a couple of real good friends here, but other than that I stay away from the ding bats. I get up and go to work and stay out of the drama. Some of you people are nasty. It's a whole lot nicer up here than it used to be and it's been quiet a long time. Over half of the complex in the new part is empty because they've kicked out the trouble makers and druggies.
This is a nice place to live and I really like it.

I changed my mind. I dont want to move in there. I have a friend I can move in with. Wonderwood is not the only place turning me away. I went in there and asked for my money back I paid for the fee and that woman wouldn't give it back to me she said it was nonrefundable. this is not the ony place that sucks. Cookeville is the same way.

I was homeless myself for awhile but I didn't have the added problem of a criminal record. A few things I learned though was: never look homeless, never tell people your homeless and take control of your own destiny. Join a cheap health club where you can shower and work out every day. Many are as cheap as 15$ per month. Think of what you know how to do and then ask yourself how do I connect with people who need this service. Next, market what you can do; vistaprint will make business cards for you in just a few weeks. You can get 250 for the price of postage only. If you can use a friends address do so if not get a PO box for around 12$ a month. Then think of where you can go to hand out those cards and talk to people. If you have been incarcerated society is set against you. Laws like, you are not allowed to work certain jobs or get student financial aid was meant as a deterent to crime but it has the effect of causing people to have less opporitunity to turn their lives around after prison. This may sound trite but spend time picturing the life you want and imaging getting what you want. For me it was praying. I never felt as close to God as when I was homeless. Last, don't let your mind imprison you now that your physically free. The hardest thing to do is change the way you think. So always keep a positive view of who you are. Everyone makes mistakes but we don't all pay in the same way. Prison is just a detail of what you have experienced, not who you are. Don't give up. Stay on your knees and God will lift you up. Blessings.

First of all dont pray for me I don't believe in it. second of all where would I get money for stupid business cards? I dont have any income. What the heck would I put on them? it's not like I'm a brain surgeon. If you excuse me that is the stupidest thing i ever heard. Just because I have a criminal record noone will rent to me, my only skills are being a waitress. I'm no longer homeless I'm staying with a friend.

Well, ya know, at least this person was willing to give you a hand UP, made some really GOOD suggestions on how to present yourself as EMPLOYABLE! What do you really want, a hand-OUT? Let's see how far it gets you after few more weeks go by. If you have no idea "what the heck" to put on a business card, then you don't sound like you are willling to do very much, one way or the other. Lotsa luck hard-a**!

*nope* and *praying for you in Algood* both sound like Moron's. Business cards? Are you frigging serious? She said her only skills were being a waitress and you two idiots want her to get business cards for that? I think ya'll had a little too much to drink or something, what other excuse do you have for sounding so stupid?

Okay, Einstein, first off; do YOU have a job? WHAT is your ever-so-smart advice to give this person who at least is saying that they want a job. Comments like yours make it sound like they do not actually WANT job, just want the free-rent and welcome-wagon at Wonderwood. Then, just like the story of "The Fox and the Grapes", when they can't get the free apartment they disrespect it. What IS your advice? Sit on yer butt & bitch & moan? Wah wah wah.....nothing to do about it but wah wah wahhhhhh.

If you handed me a business card with a phone number on it and an address, I might keep it and call you about some work I needed doing. Homeless, you are looking for excuses not to work or help yourself. These cards cost next to nothing and give the appearance that you might have something to offer. You can get a job, but it's might not be what you think you should have. You sound like a cry baby with a computer and access to the internet! You proablely got a cell phone. You remind me of a young person I saw not to long ago, who I ask if she was going to school or going to get a job. Now, she looked healthy and said she was 19 years old, and she was going to file for "her" disability! That was her ambition in life, the "hand out" not "hand up" mentality!
