Not even in the same country at the time. Civil marriage was invented to secure the property rights of those who procreated and those who they procreated. Religious marriages followed quite sometime after.

Sorry, but you'd be wrong again.......and regardless of what the real reason behind marriage was......it matters not in today's society because things have changed......and not every couple who can procreate, WILL procreate and marriage ISN'T always involved.....and parenting DOESN'T rely on the couple being biologically related to the child in every circumstances!!!!

Besides there is nothing to protect, I am married ( heterosexual marriage ) and the 18,000 legal same sex marriages did not harm my marriage in anyway whatsoever. I understand your marriage may be more fragile, but mine doesn’t need protection.

I always find it amusing when this topic comes up. People get upset about something that will not affect their lives at all. In most cases it's fundietards trying to legislate their beliefs.
