I'm somewhat ambivalent about the content of Bates' cartoons. Shrug. He's protected by free speech. However, he just isn't a good artist. Can't the Herald find a better cartoonist who can actually draw?

It's not about finding a "good" cartoonist, it's about finding one who has the same leftist leanings held by most of the Herald's readers.

Two things:

Bill Bates sucks as a cartoonist. His drawing of Vice President Cheney saying "So?" regarding American casualties was utterly despicable, but par for the course from the Herald.

The idiot who says the homeless have every right to be here obviously doesn't live in Monterey. Our neighborhood is s magnet for the homeless scum, thanks to the proximity of a liquor store,a park, and a fast-food place. The homeless have stolen stuff from our carport and vandalized one of our cars. But when you ask the Monterey police face-to-face to remove a sleeping homeless man from the office next to your house, "Officer Friendly" tells you he needs another unit - then nothing happens; the bum is left to snore in peace. The homeless infestation at the Monterey Public Library is so bad I won't let my daughter go there by herself. I emailed our erstwhile "city manager" about my concerns...you guessed it...no response...I guess the city just doesn't care.

Mettee-McCutchon Not Peoples Choise.

The Heralds recent endorsement of Ila
Mettee-McCutchon for superviser is from Heralds perspective only.

Yes, she was a garrison commander, SO??????????
And then she HAD to retire. She was a Mayor of Marina and took all the photo ops that went with it. Publicity was what she needed to get her name out there. And boy, did she ever.

Myself, as a photographer, wanted to photograph the Historic Event in Ft. Ord when the army houses was torn down. No such luck. The gate to event was tightly closed to the public, even though it had been advertized in the Herald.
I was infuriated to say the least. Here I was, over 40 year Marina resident and could not witness the history of our own city being made. But Ila got publicity

Incidentally, the Dunes developer of Fort Ord was a traveling companion with Ila and her husband in some of their trips. Now one can see where the wind is coming from. Pro Developer, Big Business. Lots and Lots of Campaign donations from them for her coffers. All one have to do is to look at all her HUGE signs on businesses all over the place.

But what about the people. Don't we count??? NOT
MUCH. HER TRACK RECORD as a mayor of not bothering to return the calls from concerned citizens in Marina was indication of not caring.
What a pity.

Alas, Jane Parker's grassroots campaign for a superviser is best suited for the people and the best choise for superviser

The epidemic of homelessness that we are witnessing is a direct result of the bankrupt economic policies of the Bush/Chaney administration. Whenever you find yourself feeling superior, just keep in mind that job security is no longer something that we can take for granted. You, too, may find yourself victimized by outsourcing. Many working Americans are only a couple of paychecks away from the street. Americans don't make anything anymore. In the future, we will all be working at McDonald's.

On the question of homelessness, we could all stand to be a lot less judgmental and a lot more compassionate. Many of these people are veterans who were unable to adjust to civilian life. Many more have been traumatized and damaged by their experiences in the war. Let's not forget that we are all "Children of God". Peace be with you.

Antonio, can I send these homeless pieces of trash to your house instead of mine? I'm mighty tired of putting up with them. I see few young vets as homeless here; it's the same bums I have been seeing for years.

You are right about Mettee-McCutchon. While I served with her and thought her a good officer, as mayor she did not seem to care one bit about her constituents' problems.

Heavens, you people who have nothing better to do than blame Bush for everything are really really pathetic...

Do you honestly believe that there would no longer be homless people in Monterey if Gore or Kerry were president?

Grow up.

Valerie, you are right, but this is Monterey, location of one of the world's largest open-air insane asylums. Just read any day's letters to the editor. There are plenty of crazy people in Monterey who are not homeless. They are fixated on Bush. They whine for his impeachment, even though that won't happen. They put Obama bumper stickers on their vehicles, even though that won't happen, either. Too many people here live in a dream world, as if the Monterey Peninsula wasn't part of the United States. I would also say the Monterey area is the least patriotic area in which I have ever resided, and I have lived all over the country. What a shame.
