SAN FRANCISCO -- A Santa Clara man who had been hospitalized for three weeks, since he was attacked after the Bay to Breakers race in May, died Friday after being taken off life support, according to a family statement posted to Facebook.
Stephen Martin was sucker-punched near Sharon Meadow during the annual cross-city race, friends told KTVU News. His head struck the asphalt, and he was hospitalized in a coma.

Martin suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on June 4, causing severe brain damage, according to the family statement. Doctors advised the family that he was brain-dead, and the family elected to take him off life support Friday morning.
Martin, costumed in a green troll wig, began arguing with a group of men in red and white 49ers jerseys around 5 p.m. One of the men ran up and punched Martin, causing him to fall and strike his head on the curb.
