Primary for Rockland County Executive Comes to Airmont

The Democratic Primary for Rockland County Executive has come to Airmont in the past few weeks. In the past, most focus has generally been on local town and village governments, but this year’s election has critical implication to the pocketbook of every Rockland County taxpayer. The county budget has reached a staggering $700 million. Last year, the bond rating agencies gave Rockland the lowest rating in the entire state. The county portion of your property tax bill increased about 100% in the past 5 years; there is also a new tax on O&R utility bills.
The race for Rockland County Executive has three major candidates. Two are longtime county Democrats; Ilan Schoenberger and David Fried. Newcomer Dagan Lacorte, serves currently as the Mayor of Suffern, Airmont’s western neighbor. Schoenberger used to represent Airmont in the Rockland County Legislature. Fried ran against Ellen Jaffee for the Assembly to represent Airmont in 2006 and was a legislator in Spring Valley. Current Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef is not running for re-election.
There are many disagreements between the candidates. Ilan Schoenberger defends the county’s budget practices. He said the bond rating agencies prefer his plan to solve the county’s $100 million deficit by borrowing the money and paying it back over ten years, which the State Legislature just approved. He says he is “Ready on Day One” to be the county executive because of his many years of government service as County Attorney, Ramapo Town Finance Director, and Chairman of the Rockland Budget committee. Schoenberger says that as Legislator, he preserved hundreds of acres of open space. He supports terms limits for the county executive and creating an office of county comptroller. His website is
Mr. Schoenberger was endorsed by Ramapo Councilman Pat Withers, Ramapo Councilman Daniel Friedman, Rockland Legislator Philip Soskin, Democratic Party Chairman Vincent Monte, the Rockland Independence Party and the Working Families Party.
David Fried began his career as an advance aide to President Bill Clinton and then-First Lady Hillary Clinton. Later, he worked as District Representative for Congresswoman Nita Lowey. He served in the Rockland County Legislature from 2003 until 2007 and was elected in 2009 as Spring Valley Village justice and stepped down a few months before the corruption scandals. Fried, whose slogan is “Leading us forward,” says he understands the concerns of taxpaying families and announced his campaign at his family’s Tire Warehouse. Fried worked for the Rockland County Sheriff obtaining grants for law enforcement agencies and was endorsed by the Correction Officers Association. He proposed cutting the size of the county Legislature and told a debate audience that he was against the desalination plant as an answer to Rockland’s water problems.
Fried has recently been attacked in Newsday ( ) for receiving over $20,000 in contributions from convicted felons for his failed Assembly race against Ellen Jaffee in 2006-the contributions were almost a third of all the money he raised and included Moses Stern, who is accused of bribing the Mayor of Spring Valley. Fried said he only met Stern once when Stern donated $10,000 to him, and that he will donate Stern’s money to charity. Fried’s website is .
Mr. Fried is endorsed by former President Bill Clinton and by Congresswoman Nita Lowey.
