Montebello City Councilman Frank Gomez Won't Seek Re-election

There are 62 comments on the www.whittierdailynews.com story from Jul 26, 2013, titled Montebello City Councilman Frank Gomez Won't Seek Re-election. In it, www.whittierdailynews.com reports that:

City Councilman Frank Gomez announced Wednesday at the City Council meeting that he will not seek re-election in November.

With the loss of economic development and the additional pressures the city will face, Gomez said the status quo won't be enough to bring the city financial stability. In Montebello's case, he said the city needs a large capital infusion. He cited three possibilities for achieving that, building in the Montebello hills, switching to the county fire department and implementing a utility tax.

During the Fall 2009 election campaign for positions of City Councilmember on the Montebello City Council one candidate, Dr. Frank Gomez, boldly spoke out against the unwise proposed Montebello Hills development. In his first campaign flyer he stated:

"What do I stand for? No new taxes! No sole-source contracts! No Montebello Hills Development!"

In a subsequent campaign flyer he proclaimed:
"No Development is Dr. Frank's commitment to preserving the Montebello Hills and protecting our residents from potential health problems due to contaminated soil."

What may have happened in the interim that has appears to have reduced his concern for the health of Montebello residents?

The only smart one on the council has decided to move on is my take. Smart man. Why should he want to even give the impression of lowering himself to the level of Art Barajas or Christina Cortez? Those two are the the worst examples of electeds that have ever sat in office in the city. As for his take on politics, we need more honest people like him.

So far, neither Art or Christina have repudiated the issues they ran on as Dr. Gomez apparently has. How does that make him honest and them 'worst'?

When they are gone, or are no longer in politics, your advice would be applicable.

This thread is concerned with the living and those still in office.

42 yr north montebello resident just can't stop me from laughing. For years I have read his thoughts all focused on the hills. Get over it buddy and get a life. The city needs money and people like you, with narrow colloquial views, will not stand in the way of progress. Gomez was the best thing since sliced bread on that city council. Best of luck to him in his pursuits. At least he won't have to deal with small town minds like you anymore. LOL

When you do stop laughing, try getting back on topic. This isn't a thread about 42yr, it's about Dr. Frank Gomez. Remember?

Gomez was the best thing since sliced bread on that city council Agree Lotsa luck Montebello

Unbelievable then lives up to his name
" The city needs money"
The hills project costs money
The hills project also brings in some money
Focus on the expenses not the largesse.
The hills project costs more money than it brings in.
Condos reduce property values
open space increases property values

There definitely is an election season approaching, as those not on the side of the residents of Montebello find it impossible to justify their own selfish interests rationally and inevitably fall back on personal invective.

The problem with this tactic is that, in some cases, selfish interests may actually coincide with the best interests of the residents, but the unthinking, inarticulate and irrational statements on behalf of their causes only cause them to be rejected by the voters.

Anyone who has actually read the posts of those who oppose the dangerous, budget-draining condo proposal know the many, many, many positive, revenue generating alternatives to destroying last open space that have been given by the residents who oppose the condo in the Hills proposal.

Several successful Montebello political personages have tried to help further unpopular, but possibly necessary ideas, but their advice has been ignored. A multi-year broad based rational factual education effort could succeed, but as illustrated above, such ideas are foreign to those who want quick solutions without any effort or thought.

If Dr. Frank is getting married and moving out of town who does he think should replace him?
Another long time Montebello political activist got married and moved to the inland empire.

Polonius:
My liege, and madam, to expostulate
What majesty should be, what duty is,
What day is day, night night, and time is time,
Were nothing but to waste night, day, and time;
Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit,
And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes,
I will be brief.
Hamlet Act 2, scene 2, 86–92

"Brevity" would be appreciated.

Ran it up the flagpole and no one has saluted
POSSIBILITIES- evaluate them, get them behind us and move on- they are impeding progress.

How about some realistic solutions, not wishful thinking or pie in the sky?
What has Larry Kosmont come up with?

I'd like to see a politician run on the dissolution of the local Fire department (Monterey Park a heads up???), higher taxes on businesses and visitors and condos.

How about boring but essential items such as a new general plan.

So the last honest man has decided to leave the council. God help the city. Now we are left with a bunch of buffoons who cannot see the forest for the trees let alone their own noses if not in front of them. Don't expect much in the way of healthy discussion on this council. City will continue to depreciate. It is all about the people elected and their lack of vision.

Now What
Exactly
And it may get worse before it gets better.
At least the corrupt former administration is gone, embezzlement has stopped (although the books are still "cooked") and there is not a current felon on the council.
If accounting for the Hilton Management, pensions and retired health insurance where shown as current obligations, the City would only too obviously be shown as bankrupt.
City accounting really has no other choice but to kick the can down the road on these obligations and hope the economy gets better.
Just do not try and snow us with trying to show a "surplus), it's just less of a hole.
Streets, tree trimming, lots of things that city's do are underfunded- as is the Economic Development department and Planning.
So how do we expect to attract new business?
Is the new general plan funded?

MONTEBELLO COUNCIL will not be able to move forward with sound decisions until all the debt and budget is actually made available to residence.

Include all the debt on the budget and be upfront with the community/residence.

This is the only way to move forward and make honest decisions on what areas to tackle first.

Respect the fact that individuals want to improve different areas in Montebello.

When the people are well informed of numbers, then and only then votes and consideration will be considered with more depth and thought in mind.

Don't sugar coat the budget! Residence need the facts and the truth on paper. When that happens, people can understand why certain areas are neglected such as tree trimming, street repairs, etc...

By the way, what type of salary do these council members receive?

When voting for upcoming postions, ask what has each council member actively done for the city, NOT what they can do. If a council member has not followed through on their word then don't vote them back in. We need people who will WALK the TALK. ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER than words.

The debt is shown in the budget, and discussed every time the budget comes up in the council. It is deferred, and does hang over all the discussions about the budget.

Water and sewer infrastructure repair and replacement are also two future problems the city will need to plan for.

So in reality there is no balanced budget, right?? Is there an actual line item that displays all debt that has been deferred?

Does this include Quiet Cannon and State Finance Dept??

Remember, a budget is generally done every year, and it includes all items to be paid for that year. So, the budget is technically balanced for the next year, but there definitely are items, like the Hilton contract, pension contributions, and other long term obligations that the city will have to pay eventually, but not next year.

The budget is also balanced for next year by borrowing from the city's Self-Insurance Fund for operating expenses to the tune of about $400,000. That is why the idea of spending several hundred thousand dollars for temporarily landscaping the Taylor Ranch construction site didn't excite anyone enough to come to the last city council meeting to speak on its behalf.

There is actually a notation that these amounts don't include deferred expenses. It is not a good thing, but it is apparently fiscally allowed.

The Quiet Cannon actually makes the city a lot of money. It's the Hilton Management Contract that is the problem for the city. The amount the city reportedly owes is now in the millions, and the interest keeps piling up, too.

So why is it that residence do not ask to view the actual statements?

Look at the original expenditure reports and bank accounts assure the money is always being spent and all lined items are applied as reflected on the budget. Cross referencing is a good thing.

There is too much spending and not enough questions and request for original documentation.

It will go on and on this way. Get the facts in black and white now.

Montebello needs people who are going to ask deep rooted questions not just rely on hear say.

Stand strong and get answers and facts in black in white. Never rely on produced reports. Just saying....
