Jason was an artist, a fanatical bicycle rider, as well as an activist who worked hard to save the last remaining open space Montebello Hills from a proposed destructive development. He participated in the Occupy LA movement and appeared in some tv news footage of the city hall lawn encampment. He once told me that the Rio Hondo river, to him, was "church".

Jason was a good person who didn't deserve to have his life cruelly taken. May his giving spirit always be flowing in the river he loved.

He was loved and involved with trying to make Montebello a bicycle friendly city and also to try to Save the Hills.

The Save the Hills banner in the Montebello Photos section of topix was made and proudly flown by him.

He was friendly to all residents, and fiercely protective of the well-being of the city of which he was so proud.

My only Big BROTHER, my PROTECTOR. I will never understand. He had such a BIG heart. Hearing all these stories how he left a positive impact on people is bringing a smile to my face. My hurt is turning into anger, I want justice for my brother. I'm proud to call you my BROTHER! PEACE & LOVE! I Love You!

My condolences go out to Jason's family. Jason was an amazing person who was caring and loving. He will truly be missed and he will forever be in our heart! My greatest memory of Jason is when we would all hang out on the porch and talk & laugh. We will miss those moments.
To Vanessa: I just wanted to tell you that your brother always spoke highly of you & when you had your son, he was so proud to be an Uncle. I know he loved your family so dearly & I am truly sorry for you loss. I will keep your family in my prayers!!

Sincere condolences to Jason's family and friends. He was very creative and such an avid activist. This is such a needless waste of such a vibrant personality. We will all miss him very much.

One Question- How do I find the Montebello Hills Photo Section of Topix so I can view Jason and the famous Banner he rode around town and waved at pertinent events?

It is on the Montebello News page on the right side. Here is a link to the photo itself:

There should be a photo of Jason holding the banner on the story here, but it isn't shown on some small screen portable devices.

I have uploaded the photo showing him holding the banner, and it should be visible in a day or two after topix approves it.

Vanessa, so sorry for your loss. I am in deep shock. I have so many memories with Jason. I remember his smile and a funny Carlton dance he would do from The Fresh Prince. I remember him going with me to his first Spanish Rock Concert to see Shakira in 1997. He really loved it. Jason was really a great artist and he was very athletic. At this point I honestly do not know what to say or think. I would really like to contact you. My sister posted a message moments ago with a contact phone number. Please make contact with her. Unfortunately, topix almost automatically removed messages with contact info like phone numbers. There will be at least one upcoming fundraising event for Jason's funeral where you can contact her.

The following was posted at the request of friends of Jason.

Jason's Family has set up a bank account at Bank of America to help defray the funeral expenses. It is in the name of Jason M. Rivera and the account number is 325000998800.

Instead of flowers or balloons, it is requested that you donate to this account. The friends and family of Jason thank you for your help.

Jason... let me say that Jason was loved and apart of my family. We will always love him and remember his kind heart and soul. I always will remember those times me and my brother would go to his house and jam out. And the New Years he spend with us. As well as all those other holidays, he was such a kind and cheerful guy. You couldn't help but be happy and laugh when you were with him. I can't for the life of me think why any one would do this to him??? All he ever was to every one was a true friend. We are all heart broken and devastated to hear of this tragic and truly saddening event. Jason we will always love you brother and will never forget you. Your light shall shine on for eternity and you will live in every ones hearts you touched for ever!

Jason Rivera was a gentle, artistic soul with a deep sense of justice and a passion for the environment. He was my friend and I already miss him very, very much.

Vaya con Dios, mi amigo.

At city events, like the fall festival, the 'Recycling Festival', any event that the Save the Montebello Hills had a table at, and even city council meetings where the Hills were discussed or agendized.

He would ride up on his bicycle, banner flying on a stout long staff, or walk with it held up high where he couldn't ride. My eyes are tearing up just thinking of it.

His gentle good spirits and steadfastness in the face of greed and carpetbaggers will be missed. Can someone step up and take his place? Only time will tell.

I believe this was at last May's Earth Day Event in the city park on Whittier Blvd. It might have been called a 'Recycling Fair', but I'm not sure of the official name.

He also stood outside La Merced Intermediate in peaceful protest when the proposed developer held an outreach event there for La Merced area residents. Partly because of the developer's supporters characterization of him, but mainly because of the outrage the details of the proposed condo development caused, another citizen's group was formed that day to channel the near-unanimous opposition to the dangerous proposal into political action.
