In June I was issued summons along with over 100 drivers for passing a staged pedestrian police operation. I found out MPD performed the same operation in May to over 100 drivers. Each summons carries $230 fine 2 pts. In court the cost $400. The policemen wrote these out on clipboards never once checking the fact that I had not been ticketed in @ 20 years. I live in a neighboring town and had done so much of my business in that community for years, in fact I was on my to a Montclair market when this happened. With this action I have decided that Montclair will not receive my business activities. I have found new restaraunts, makets, convenience stores etc. that will receive all my business. $ 400 is alot of money to take from someone when people are out of work or struggling. Good luck Montclair these kinds of activities have doomed businesses in other aggressive towns.

Its good to know that crime has dropped so much in Montclair that the cops have time to fill the towns coffers with some bullshit trap.

Think about it intuitively. If people are out of work or struggling, less people are going out of the house. if less people are going out of the house, less people are out on the roads causing violations. The cops need to drum up buisness. Violation money is a number that has to be met in the budget.

The State of New Jersey gives Montclair and other towns a grant to pay those officers to issue these zero tolerance summonses. It's called walk safe and it's for the safety of pedestrians, which is a big problem in a city like Montclair bustling with drivers talking and texting and not paying attention to pedestrians. Also, crime WAS at an alltime low in Montclair due to a diligent police administration that did refocus on traffic enforcement. Traffic enforcement statistically has proven to reduce crime because it sends a message to bad guys that you will likely be stopped by police in this town, so you might want to take your crimes elsewhere. With constant threats to police manpower and supervision, along with weak economy, you can probably kiss all the progress goodbye.

You can try to sugar coat it anyway you want realitycheck, but the fact of the matter is that the fine is excessive. If you work a minimum wage job ($7.50) you would have to work over 50 hours just to pay your ticket. Does that sound fair to you?

All the more incentive not to get tickets...

Here is a nice fact for you. I have not shopped, food shopped or had dinner in that town since my $ 400 summons in June 2010. This easily cost business in this town at least triple the amount of that summons.
