Monroeville man arrested after gun-in-court phone call

A Monroeville man who called in advance and asked what would happen if he fired a gun in a Family Court hearing was arrested after he showed up for that hearing, the Allegheny County Sheriff's office said.

The Family Division reported that 25-year-old Herbert Pinckney called on Thursday and said he was unsure about being able to control his emotions if the plaintiff was in the same room with him at the upcoming hearing.

According to the sheriff's office, Pinckney asked, "So if there is a cop in there with me and I pull out a gun and shoot her, does the cop have permission to kill me?" He also allegedly said they should be prepared for something to happen if he had to attend this hearing, and he asked to reschedule but was told that it was too late.

On Friday morning, sheriff's deputies detained Pinckney and a friend for questioning and a weapons search as the two men approached the Family Court entrance on Ross Street.

Deputies said they found a 3-inch folding knife in the friend's pocket and asked Pinckney about it, to which he allegedly responded, "I gave it to him right before we came into the building so that I would not draw attention to myself or in case I decided to do something stupid."

Pinckney and his friend, 24-year-old Ali Saad Abdulj-Abugalal, of Greenfield, were arrested on charges of criminal conspiracy and possession of a weapon in a court facility, the sheriff's office said. Pinckney was also charged with terroristic threats because of the phone call.
