Senator Rob Portman, Republican of Ohio, has switched his stand on
same-sex marriage, saying he now supports it after his son told him he
is gay.

Mr. Portman, who had been considered one of the leading candidates to
be Mitt Romney’s running mate in 2012, told Ohio newspapers that his
son Will told him and his wife, Jane, in 2011 of his sexual
orientation.

“It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective, and
that’s of a dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same
opportunities that his brother and sister would have — to have a
relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years,” Mr. Portman
was quoted by Cleveland.com as telling reporters in an interview in
his Washington office.

“If anything, I’m even more proud of the way he has handled the whole
situation,” the senator said of his son, a student at Yale.“He’s an
amazing young man.”

His decision to become the only sitting Republican senator to so
publicly embrace same-sex marriage

Just as the dick did ,after he found out his daughter had a baby and she said she was a virgin ,plus being gay..WOW!! What happen to the republicans Christian Value Program?

"What happen to the republicans Christian Value Program?"

Sounds like they are becoming as heathenistic as the Democrats.

Mr portman might see his change of values as being positive and supportive of a group that have existed throughout history but all he's really done is traded his seat in Heaven for a one way ticket to the lake of fire. god hates gays. period.

Sure he is allowed to change his mind, but if his son had fallen in love with a sheep or decided to marry 3 women would he be now for either of those life style choices? You either believe in your principles or you dont and while opinions change with age a lot of times there arent usually in such a short span. He was against it only a few months back, he appears to me now as just a demorat in drag and might as well hop parties.

I also found this very shocking, surprising and was disapointed. This news lit-up the main-stream media. They tried to tie one Republican's, Mr. Portman's, view to all Republicans, which would be very incorrect.
I think another reason it made so much of a stir is Republicans are held to a higher standard.
The Republicans are more responsible and moral that other political affiliations.
Therefore the news and shock.
However if it would have been a Democrat, for example, it would not have been much of a shock and probably would not have raised Scott Smelly's eyebrows. Democrats are held to a very low standard and many have qustionable morals.
Many of the Gay community does not support Republicans, I guess thats why the first Gay President is a Democrat and its not too shocking or news worthy.

Bill Clinton SIGNED the Defence of Marriage Act (mid 90's)! Also, at that time Hillary, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and many other Democrats supported marriage between a man and woman ONLY! Not now!

My point is the liberals give Saint Slick Willie a free pass but start a stoopid post about a Republican. You use the "short span" comment, well Clinton must have been against the day before he announced he was for it, according to that logic. Liberals live in a perpetual state of " if the Democrat says it or does it then it must be right." But,of course, that only applies to Democrats and nobody else.

While i agree with you, the difference here is everyone knows oh Billy boy changed his mind with the wind. What ever the pole says, much like Odumbo, is what he was for. I wished our leaders would stand by their beliefs and not what is the easiest path. I dont care he changed his mind that is fine, but if he did just because of his son's choice to me that isnt a change in conviction but a change of convenience.

What is more believable? A change of mind based upon events concerning your own family or seemingly to just adhere to the Party edicts?
IDK

If the only sin was in "same gender unions" I would be against it. But when I see how many "opposite gender unions" fall apart due to absolutely deplorable sins, why would anyone say only "same gender unions" are sinful?

You said exactly what i am getting, if he truly believed it was wrong it would be wrong regardless if his son was or not. While he wouldnt love him any less he would still not sanction his actions. If his believe was truly what he said before and a religious conviction the fact his choose that life style still doesnt change the religious/moral up bringing he had.

That is why i asked was his belief before really a deep seeded commit or just a nice poll number belief.

And he just LOVES mean spirited busy bodies who love to be judgmental. Hope he repents, goes to Heaven, and sits right beside you. Oh, that is, if YOU make it!
