Why are you making a big deal out of this? Who died and left you in-charge of the county coffers? Almost every law enforcement agency in the state allows officers to use vehicles for off duty work. The work must be approved by someone at an administrative level. The visibility of the vehicles deters crime. The officers working off duty are responsible for handling incidents that occur there, allowing the officers on duty to handle other calls. Some agencies allow their officers to drive their assigned vehicles as if they were their own, to take kids to school, go to the grocery store etc. I know this is not allowed in Union County. I know alot of these guys and it's a shame what they're paid. They work days, nights, holidays & weekends protecting us for less than $40,000.00 a year It's a wonder they don't all go to Charlotte and make $10-$15,000.00 more per year not including off duty work. Some have, some have gone to Charlotte and returned, but most prefer to work here where they were raised and feel like they're making a difference. You should be thankful for them and the sacrifices they make. They miss alot of time with their families, miss alot of their childrens ball games, church plays etc. They work alot of off duty trying to buy things for their families that you take for granted. Most people couldn't do the job or wouldn't want to, because like the ministry law enforcement is a calling. It takes a special type of person to do what they do & I am greatful.

Where do you get double taxation? Sure your paying county taxes that a portion of go to the Sheriff's Office. And you pay city taxes that a portion go for law enforcement. If you had your own Police Dept you would still pay the same amount if not more for law enforcement. So your going to pay taxes for law enforcement services no matter which way you turn. Why is it so hard for some people to understand this? Is it important what color uniform they wear or what it says on the car? Or is the really important issue that you have adequate professional law enforcement?

When many officers entered their career they were single. Time goes on, then there's a family to support. Living beyond their means is not an issue. Not to mention pay raises at he county level have been dismal usually 3% or less. I feel they should be paid along the same lines as the Highway Patrol. Now understand this the Highway Patrol are not the "state police" they are misdemeanor traffic cops. Yet if a Trooper who starts at around $38,000.00 stays out of trouble after six years they are up to approx.$50,000.00 a year. For what? Chasing speeders and working traffic accidents. They don't respond to domestic calls, mental subjects, house/car break ins etc. All of the things our Deputies do daily

maybe one day when you are at some event that they are NOT working security, some incident occurs and you get hurt...then you won't worry about taxes...you should spend your time worrying about other things.

I get the feeling there's more to this than meets the eye. So... Whats really the issue here? Whats gotten you in such an uproar? Has someone at the Sheriff's Office done you wrong? I'll be waiting for your reply and I hope your able to provide more than the usual one liners and quips.

WhoAsked U, Are you a deputy because it sure sounds like you are. Why don't you come clean and be honest about who you are. That is the only reason you are defending this claim. I think that if the officer is going to work off-duty then the money needs to go through the Sheriff's Office so they are held accountable. If not then let them put in for overtime and pay them that way. I don't get to use my work vehicle to go to my second job so why should the deputies?

I don't think this is right. Why should they be special and get to use our money to make them money. Everyone is hurting now so what makes them special. I know its a tough job, but they chose to do this for a living. What really ticks me off is to hear about them watching movies when they are working off-duty jobs. How can you be protecting us while watching movies???

Concerned Citizen wrote: The Union County Sheriff's Office is allowing Deputies to use marked county patrol cars and gas paid for by the county to work off-duty jobs. An off-duty job is when a private businees or citizen( such as First Baptist Church of Indian Trail, Kates Skating Ring, Union County Schools) hires a Deputy that is not on his regular shift at a rate of $20.00 to $22.00 an hour to work security or direct traffic. The deputies are paid individual with no taxes taken out of their pay. Neither the Sheriff's Office nor the county keep track of the pay that the officers make and hold them accountable to claim it on their taxes. I can guarantee you that Cheif Bailey nor Lt. Burns claimed their off-duty on their taxes last year, and why I use them as example is because Cheif Bailey teaches ethics and Lt. Burns is over internal affairs. Some of the deputies even take time off of their regular shift to work off duty and leave the county short while they make extra money using county vehicles and county gas. I think this needs to be addressed to the county commissioners and to the public. blessed are the peacekeepers!!!!!!!

I wish I was. I miss it terribly. I thought more money would make things easier for my family. In some ways it has for them but not for me. I had several opportunities to work with the people at your Sheriff's Office and was always impressed by the quality of people there. For a smaller agency they had some of the best I've worked with.

Your correct it doesn't change things but what I was looking for was perspective and to find out why you've singled them out. And by the way, it is not stealing from the county when the work was approved. Stealing inplies that it was done without the knowledge of the agency. Also, as long as you make less than $600.00 from any one side job the income does not have to be reported.
