Has anyone besides me had some really high water bills lately? I first noticed something over 2 years ago when my bill went from about $40 to $150 (i'm just outside town limits and do not pay for sewage and garbage collection). I called the town and was told I must have a leaky toliet. My bill was showing I had used more than 30,000 gal in 1 month. I even had my poor hubby crawling around under the house looking for a broken pipe. We could find nothing wrong so I started reading my own meter several times a week and keeping track on a calender. We found a few mistakes over the next few months, but nothing to really complain about.

I did get really tired of doing this so I've been very slack and have not read my meter in many months. This past month a get another whopper!! I just about had a heart attack in the Post Office! This time my bill says I've used about 35,000 gal of water in the last month (around 3,000 is more like it). what can one do in this situation??

I did learn one thing. They do NOT read meters every month. I have come to the conclusion that they make up my bill for most months, then when they finally really do read it, its some astronomical number. If the employees are not going to read it every month, then just say so...call it an estimated bill, instead of an actual bill. I have saved all my bills for the last 3 years. I kept saying I was going to the town hall and pile them all out on somebody's desk and say "Where in the He11 do you get these numbers?" The only thing stopping me is my husband doesn't want to be embarrassed!!

dee, My bill was outrageous. I had Gene Stewart come out and check the connection between my meter and the house. He said the line was bad and I was losing pressure between the meter and the house which meant a leak. He dug it out and replaced it with a much better pipe. That solved the problem. My bill has been less than $50 every month since then.

In the summer months when I was using water like crazy, my bill would be around $35-$45. Even with my sprinklers going and I would be holding my breath thinking the next bill would be the killer, but then several months away...as I recall both times were my Dec. bill, the cummulative water amounts finally caught up. The month it was over $200. With just hubby and me, I know damn well we didn't use that much water in 1 month.

Its hard to try and conserve water when you don't really know how much you're using. I also don't think I should have to go out in my yard and dig through the mud and read my meter.

I had a friend tell me that her meter was so overgrown with sod/grass that she knew hers had not been read for YEARS. She said someone would need a shovel to dig around it bebore it could even be opened.

We did have a plumber come last week and he found nothing wrong. I guess I'll just have to resume doing my own reading again if I want to know how much I'm really using.

If the town is only going to read meters a couple of times a year, then by golly, just SAY so!. And I don't appreciate calling the town hall and being told my toliet is leaking. Thats like peeing on my foot and telling me its raining!

I had the same problem in 06-07. Tested toilets, crawled under the house, fixed stuff.......still HUGE water bills.........FINALLY cut off the cut off to the house and left for two days, came back, over a thousand gallons through the meter. NO WAY it went to the house, no signs of water anywhere.

There was an underground leak from the meter to the house somewhere, it was cheaper to just run a new line from the meter to the house than to dig up the old, which was on my neighbor's property anyway.

I read my meter EVERY week, I know when I have a problem. My house is 62 years old and spouts water problems all along.....I monitor mine weekly.

This summer, huge bill.......why? Because I watered the garden, pressure washed the house and sidewalks........and the bill for that was WAY later than it was done, you forget what you have done.........

Dee you probably need a new line like I did.

My water bill is out of control. They don't read these meters.I can fill a swimming pool and my water bill goes up only $20.00.(even amount- really???) 3 or 4 months later, for no reason at all, my water bill will double??? And it continues to be so unpredictable and sporadic. But it is almost NEVER under $100.00 now. Interesting considering my friends in Indian Trail and Monroe have bills no more that $35-$40 a month. I am convinced they charge whatever they feel like charging. This is a corrupt little town we live in.

I've been hearing that a lot lately. Many people believe, as you do, that they aren't reading the meters or are reading them incorrectly. Our water bill stays about the same every month. So I haven't said a word on this but I know several people who say that theirs is outrageous. I know one man who has done like Griffin and Norma and had all kinds of tests run and replaced some of his pipes but his bill is still high. He says he doesn't understand how he and his family could use the amount of water they are being charged for.

The meeting tonight is at the Community Center. Are we going to meet for coffee before?

We started received higher than normal water bills about 3-4 months ago. September,October and November's bills were where we saw the biggest increase. My husband works for Union County Public Works and he read the meter, it has been read incorrectly and they fixed the first month's bill. The 2nd and 3rd I just paid because I didn't want the hassle. This month it was about right. Not really sure what is going on. I also have a small pet peeve issue with the payment system for the Marshville water/garbage. When I pay my bills I always round up to the next dollar and it usually leaves a small credit on the account. The first time I paid my water bill in August 2008 I did the same thing. They sent me my check back and said it had to be exact. A little odd that their accounts receivable system cannot handle a credit but whatever!

Isn't it ironic that they want the checks to be exact, but the water meter reading doesn't have to be exact? I have been doing battle with them and saving all my bills now for about 3 years. Why?? I have no idea. I can't just refuse to pay. I do know that they don't read it every month and even when they do, they make some costly mistakes, but don't want to admit it. Its dishonest to make up water usage per month and allow people to think its exact usage. As I've said before, if they are not going to read it every month, then they should just say so and call it an estimated bill.

We have watched her pull up to the meter, scribble somethng in a book & drive away. NEVER GOT OUT OF TRUCK. Im ready with the video camera, maybe the counsil will then admit our bills are 'guestimates' instead of actual readings. You would think that with all the people looking for a job the town could find someone to read the meters correctly! To Melisa, I transposed the numbers on my check from $57.69 to $56.97-they cut my water off because of a mistake. I was short less than $1.00-Town Hall got a piece of my mind over that one-& no I did not pay the reconnection fee.

THAT IS CRAZY! It costs them more in their time to cut someone's water off and then back on all over a $1.00. They really might need some management courses and possibly some consultants to assist them with some of their day-to-day business. Sorry for all the incorrect grammer in my prior post, I was in a hurry!

I get so upset about our water bills thats its a wonder I don't have a stroke. I sure don't mind paying what I owe, but to have someone just Make up water usage amounts just makes me mad as h#ll!!
It also upsets me to be told my toliet is leaking. Then to pay a plumber to tell me its not anything at my house. You know what they say about "you can't fight city hall" it sure is true! The woman on the phone when you call about your bill is like arguing with a 2 year old..its a no win situation! I wish I could prove how I've been cheated over the years, but HOW does one do that? I sure don't think its MY job to dig in the mud and read my own meter because the town employees are too incompetent to do so. I agree with the other poster that with all the folks looking for work, the town could hire people with a brain to read the meters correctly!

Dee you probably need a new line like I did.
My bill dated 12/10/09 was $212.86. On 12/21/09 I happened to be home and saw them read my meter. I ran out and read it myself. I couldn't wait to get my next bill in January to compare. Sure enough the water usuage was exactly the same as when I read it. If my line was leaking or toliet running my bill would have been high again. It was $36.39. There's no way I would use 37,000 gal one month then use 4,000 the next. At least this time I didn't pay a plumber to tell me what I already suspected.

If anyone has any ideas on how to stop the making up of water bill just so they don't have to read meters each month, then please share.
