I heard a gas station in Frenchtown took down his donation buckets because it appears to be a fraud. I believe he is sick, but there also appears to be information out there that the family is exploiting his sickness to their advantage.

Point 1: The family held a dinner and raffle to raise money for his health care expenses. Several major companies like Best Buy donated items for the raffle. The family sold tickets to the raffle at the dinner and the community. People gave their hard earned money to help Tommy and to get a shot at winning one of the major items from the raffle.

However, Tommy's family also bought raffle tickets. When the raffle was concluded, Tommy's family won nearly every major item that had been donated. Something doesn't sound right about that...a) the family shouldn't have been allowed to buy tickets because of the appearance of impropriety...yet they did; and b) the won and no one else did.

Point 2: As the number of donation centers has grown, so has the number of donations and exposure. Exposure leads to more donations. Has anyone stopped to ask where all the money is going?

Shortly after 9/11 many nonprofits cashed in on the tragedy. Many were exposed. Some were not. The theme that came out after the scandals settled down was fund-raising organizations need oversight. Oversight by independent agencies....agencies that do investigations and audits. This kind of oversight helps avoid corruption because it makes fund-raisers account for the funds they receive and it makes them show where those funds ultimately ended up. Who is providing oversight in Tommy's family fund-raising venture?

Perhaps, if there was an independent agency looking into things, Tommy's family could explain what funds paid for their new 2008 vehicle. They could also explain the new parcel of real estate that's been purchased in their name in Monroe County. I heard 6 acres, but even if it's only 1 acre, it needs to be accounted for. Where did the money come from for these expenditures? Are the fundraisers designed to raise money for Tommy's healthcare expenses or are they designed to line the pockets of his relatives?

People of Monroe, I do not ask that you refrain from generosity or from helping those in need. I ask to follow the money trail when you donate. I ask you to hold people accountable if they abuse your good faith and generosity. And, most importantly, I ask you to look into the Tommy Brancheau fund raiser, so that your money is used for the purpose you intended it to serve.
