I am inspired to write this letter after seeing the passionate, mature actions of the students in the Masuk music program as they attempt to save the job of a man who is clearly one of the best teachers in the school system ("Kids can't save Masuk music post," Connecticut Post, June 2). My husband and I have been residents of Monroe all our lives. We are Masuk graduates, and alumni of the Masuk music program. We have seen the town grow and change immensely in our years of residency, and consider ourselves politically neutral. As I sit here writing this, I have flashbacks of when I was a sixth-grader at Chalk Hill Middle School, writing a letter to the editor in support of the music program, which was in jeopardy of being cut by budget shortfalls.
I've seen a lot of budget votes, parties that passionately plea their cases to "vote yes," "vote no" or "just vote" -- and think they know best where the money should be cut and spent. Many residents and employees of this town use a lot of time and energy pointing fingers, placing blame, and stamping their feet like spoiled children -- too busy being angry at one another to see the big picture. Each political group is so busy expressing differences that sometimes it's difficult to see our one commonality -- we all love Monroe.
So who is to blame for the budget shortfall that will result in teacher layoffs and other school cuts? Is it the economy? The voters? The Board of Education? Yes, yes, and yes!
There is a children's story called "Stone Soup." It is about a village experiencing famine, as a result, each citizen is hoarding his last pieces of food, certainly not enough to sustain a family during the winter. A hungry man came to their town, intent on making "soup from a stone" -- but in order for the soup to cook, each citizen needed to supply one ingredient. Miraculously, when each person sacrificed one thing, the soup was a success, and fed the entire community!
Our taxes have increased, and now it's time for some other ingredients to be thrown into the pot. I firmly believe that if everyone makes a small concession, our town can make it's own pot of stone soup which will provide sustenance to the community, especially during this time of "famine."
Both my husband and I work, and due to the economy, I am not getting a raise this year, and my husband's bonus compensation has been significantly decreased. I have three children in the public school system, one who loves music, one who loves theater and one who loves sports, along with a mother who is a senior citizen living on a fixed income.
Many different needs and wants under the same roof, but together we are able to compromise so everyone gets along, everyone is happy (most of the time), but, most importantly, everyone's needs are met.
So now the challenge is out there -- who is going to throw in the next ingredient for Monroe's stone soup?

Is this the "the forest through the trees" letter that everyone was talking about?
