I still miss Cristo's Hamburger Heaven, where Pulako's on W. 26th is now. They had the best greek burgers and chocolate shakes when I was a kid. I also miss Frontier bakery, where they had those pretzel sandwich rolls. Anyone know where you can find those anymore? What about that big grocery store where Champion Ford is now? I remember going there as a kid and was amazed at how big it was...Super Duper I think? It was cool to see your groceries get hauled away on that little track, and you could pull right up and they would load them into your car.

My paternal grandfather owned Frontier Bakery until he retired in the early 1960s and moved out to Southern California. I was maybe 3 when he passed away in 1963. Do you remember the cross-streets of Frontier Bakery? I would love to visit Erie again and see my late father's home on Sassafras, Cathedral Prep High School and St. Joseph's Parish and Elementary School that he spoke of so often and with such affection. Thank you!

I remember getting all dressed up with my mother and Grandmother and taking the. Us from Harborcreek into Erie for a big outting. We'd ride the elevator, which had an employee who would operate the doors, up to the top floor of the Boston Store and have a Waldorf salad. That was really living it up!

Wow Hullaballoo was the hottest place to sneek out to on Saturday night and hear local bands and meet friends. As for the peanut place on State Strret - It's still there & the lady is a character!

I have no idea either.
When I went sledding on Old Maid's Hill, there was a ruined two-story house nearby with a barn. I think that's where the Old Maid lived. It was an empty, scary hulk in 1958.

There was a creek named McDaniels or something that ran from Old Maid's woods down to the lake, parallel somewhat to Wagner Ave. I was high and fast several times a year. I still dream about it. It was buried with sewer pipes sometime later, with no trace now.

I remember a restaurant called the College Inn. A girl from the owner's family and I went to Erie Day School in 1959. I also remember catching the bus as a boy in front of the Boston Store. There was a big "bank" style clock standing in the sidewalk. Occasionally I would get a submarine sandwich from a counter in the Boston Store. My dad worked in the Perry Building at Penn Mutual Insurance Co. Another friend's dad was an executive at the Erie Brewing Co. I also went to Diehl Elementary School in 1956.

Old Maid's Hill was that at the top of Downing? The old ashphalt or 3 hills as we used to call it?

How about the old Columbis and Colonial theaters? I know they were downtown near the Shea's but cannot recall. I used to go see some horror movies there in the late 50's.

I don't even know why it was called Old Maid's Woods. Do you?
I grew up on Bird Drive and spent a lot of time playing, sledding and even partying at Old Maids. The story I grew up with was that 2 old maids lived there and they were murdered and their house was burned down.
