I WISH THEY WOULD LEAVE THE LAKE ALONE AND STOP BUILDING SO MANY EXPENSIVE HOUSES. NOT MANY PEOPLE CAN AFFORD THE HUGE HOUSES THAT ARE ON THE LAKE NOW. I HAVE BEEN COMING TO SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE SINCE I WAS 5 YEARS OLD AND I AM NOW 39 YEARS OLD. I WISH I WOULD HAVE JUST STAYED LIKE IT WAS IN THE PAST WHERE YOU COULD JUST COME TO A CAMPGROUND AND CAMP OUT OR HAVE A TRAILOR OR CAMPER AND HAVE A GREAT TIME NOW EVERYTHING IS SO EXPENSIVE THAT IT IS GETTING HARDER AND HARDER FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS PERSON TO HAVE SOMETHING FUN TO DO. EVERYONE FROM THE NORTH IS WANTING TO MOVE HERE IN VIRGINIA AND THEY COME HERE AND GET THE LAND CHEAPER AND THEN BUILD ON IT AND MAKE EVERYTHING SO EXPENSIVE THAT THE MIDDLE CLASS PERSON CANT AFFORD IT.

And thanks to the Federal Government's power grab to micro-manage the lake's development, it will only get worse. They would rather protect worms than permit affordable public access. They are too blinded by their bureaucracy to understand the affect on average people. Not to leave out the SML Assoc (of grumpy old rich Yankees), who are happy you can't afford lake access.

This is sad that they wish to keep out the not so rich and deprive children of the simple ways to camp and fish ... and learn survival techniques.

It’s also sad that those who now set the rules for the lake are so distant from it
… but not necessarily by geography.

Not that they aren’t trying to do the right thing. The perspective of such a large entity simply can’t perceive/appreciate the affect it has on individuals (just ask the folks losing their jobs in order to protect worm habitat). That’s one reason local and state government is supposed to handle these issues, not the feds.

Yeah I have To agree with you on this I've been going to Smith Moutain Lake Every since I was 9 years old and now I am 20, The lake has changed alot, My aunt used to have a house right on the lake with noone around for miles. When she moved the man that owned it, sold it and now it has about 2 or 3 Multimillion Dolar House around it and it was just a double wide.
