As far as Monahans is concerned, the high school and junior high bands have always been quite respected, and both have a rich tradition.

In today's world, however, many bands are leaving the more traditional shows and styles and moving into more popular and contemporary settings. Dear friend reading this post, how do you feel about this?

I believe in the "real" music theory. But in the case of an "off" year from state, then sure, why not do a show like transformers or pirates? Or maybe even Jekyll and Hyde.

I think that the kids would enjoy it more if they were able to do more of the popualar music, maybe have a drum line and apply some dance into it. Alot of the kids these days want to express themselves and I think it would be great if we were able to bring that stuff to the Monahans Band. At least the high school. Leave the Jr. High out since they are just beginning to learn marching skills and it will give them a reason to work hard to make it to the high school band.

I do not think it should really matter what the band plays. The most important thing is that the kids learn something from it. Also after last year and my child attending another small school in Texas, the kids did not enjoy or understand the music. They did not do very well at contest. They came back this year and did tremendously better. Now the kids are hyped for the up and coming year. Due to the teacher staying with something that the kids would enjoy, and that is what is all about. THE KIDS!!!!

I agree with band mom. I came from Monahans band days where Mr. Sealy and Mr. Fortenberry were here. The band would not be Monahans band if they moved into drum lines and echoed what was done in movies about ghetto high schools. I say leave the band the way it is!

I believe it has ALL to do with the direction of the band! I havent been too amused with the band since MR. Sealy, ect... left! I do not believe they hold up the class or strength in performances like back in the day. I played under the direction of Mr. Sealy, Floyd, ect... and I am not enthused with the direction in which it is now!

I mean, they cant even walk in to a room with the "Big Green Pride" cause they dont even know how to wear their uniform properly(or have the class to make sure its on and strapped completely). I was disgusted with the end of year performances cause they dont add up and the fact that 85% of these kids walked in during performances, and to add insult to injury, the uniform was not properly strapped. The "thuggish-I can do whatever I want act" never went down when I was in school cause they made sure we represented and that we outranked everyone elses. Hard instructors, but damn good! Thats the class the band use to have and it got us far. Always DIV 1's! Its real sad to see what the now "Little" Green Band has become! One thing has to be learned definately... Having CLASS and Pride!

MHS band reflects upon their parents. You raised them that way. It is an image of you. You are the only ones at fault, you fail at parenting.

The only MHS bands that received serious critical acclaim (at whatever level) were ones headed by Gibbs and Gibbs. Dan turned the band into greatness from nothing. Tony assembled pieces that were built by guys like Fortenberry, Sealy, and Floyd...plus the ones he created from the ground up...and turned them into the nice late '90s run.

The new director is young and still learning his way, but he'll be well served to stay with the styles that the Gibbs' have done, as opposed to some of the more urban/suburban band settings.

What do you mean? Did you happen to see our kids Saturday at Odessa? If you didn't you should keep your mouth shut. I can't speak for High School but Jr. High was wonderful. When they came on the field they were full of CLASS and PRIDE! Mr. Loya is a wonderful teacher. My child was on that field and I'm sure every parent was proud of their child. Their is a lot of hard work to a great band and all of our "LITTLE GREEN BAND" and parents need to be proud.
