ODESSA, Texas Four people have been charged with murder in the death of a 23-year-old whose body was found in a ditch about a month after he went missing.

The body of Robert Clayton Thornhill Jr. was found Tuesday after one of the suspects led police to a ditch eight miles northwest of Goldsmith. Thornhill had been missing since May 21.

According to an affidavit signed by a judge, two Odessa teenagers and two 20-year-olds gave statements to Odessa police that Thornhill's throat was slit with a large knife and he was then shot with a crossbow.

Derek Elms, 20, Willie Carl Hurst, 18, Heather Mitchell, 19, and Kathleen Newbury, 20, were arrested and charged with murder in Thornhill's killing. All four remained in the Ector County Detention Center on Thursday morning on bonds of $500,000 each. A jail official said attorneys were not listed for any of the four.

Police have not released a motive in the killing.

Thornhill's mother said she didn't know any of the suspects charged in the case.

"Robert was a very gullible kiddo. I think everybody wants to be loved and love somebody," Karen Thornhill told the Odessa American for its Wednesday editions. "I think this time, he met up with some people who he thought were his friends."
"He had certain learning disabilities that run in my family," she said. "He'd tell me 'Mom, I'm not stupid, I just learn things in a different way.'"

She said her son was very outgoing and played softball in several local leagues.

Police said it was Hurst who led detectives to the body Tuesday afternoon.

Cpl. Sherrie Carruth said the body was sent Wednesday to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Yes it's time to help these murders as quickly as possable right into the electric chairs to prevent them from killings any more of us. We are killing ourselves by not carrying out the exicutions quickly

i know both willie and derek. they both admitted to me and a few friends about them killing thornhill. derek was fighting thornhill and he tried to get away. derek pulled out his knife on him and slit his throat. willie noticed that thornhill was still fighting back, so he shot him with the crossbow. (that is all i know)

I saw all of them the night of the murder. I used to party with heather... I had known her for a while, but we didnt really have a friendshp or anything. I also knew Robert. I met at a friends house and he was a really nice guy from what I could tell. My friend told me like 2 days after they had been arrested that they had told him they killed Robert.

I know the hurst family very closely and i was told the story by willie's mother and sister, he did not shoot the crossbow, contrary to popular belif, but he could not prove it so they still judged it as murder when he really only stood by and watched.

Did he report the murder? No he did not, he was there whether or not he shot the crossbow, the responsible humane thing to do was to report the murder. And unless the mother and sister were there, you have to ask yourself if they know what really happened. I don't know who he is but I could not imagine what his family must be going thru. I have always tried to teach my children to be mindful of what they do, because their choices can affect those around them in a positive or negative manner. My heart does go out to the family and hope only justice and not vengeance for the Thornhills will be found.

i knew the girl kathleen in school. no one was ever nice to that kid.ever. she didnt have a fightin chance. no one not even her own parents took an interest in that poor lost girl. i think she did this in a very loud and violent cry for attention and recognition. if u have ever seen her mug shot, she smiling like shes taking a class photo. its chilling.

kathleen quit school like 2 years ago. I know many kids that grow up with their birth parents. she choices the wrong people to hang out with. now i didnt see her mug shot, and if she smiling like shes taking a class photo. for murder charges that is really weird.

I know what they did was wrong and sick and they all need help..believe me.

I knew thes ppl and derek had always been nothing but nice to me. He was sick though and we all knew it. He had a troubled high school life filled to the rim with just messed up things...

but you ppl who are placing the death penalty on them saying they get what they deserve..should feel ashamed!! Yes did something wrong and they admitted to it...they didn't lie about it.

I cant stand ppl like you!!! Its because of People like you that they were the way they were!!! You would have never given them the time of day!!...You would have never approached these ppl gotten to know them!

You dont sit there and pass judgment!! its not your place!

They were perfectly sane and knew what they were doing. If they had the chance, they would murder you and raeps your body for days.
