Did'nt grad. The pits were just south of the airport. Between 15th st. and the airstrip. They are duck ponds now across the street from the old folks home on 15th. If i was to grad it would have been the same year. Could i get your last name, if you don't mind.

I guess I never explored the pitts. Darn and now they're gone and it's too late.

Ok, you have to tell me what I missed so that I can vicariously relive my misbegotten youth!

I saw my first movie in an indoor theater at the Jerry Lewis Theater. The movie was "Funny Girl". I think that place was also called The Smiley Theater. I also remember the (2) drive-ins. The Lobo Drive In and the Corral Drive In.

Furr's, Sumners', M System and Mitchell's were the grocery stores in town and the Corner Drug Store had the best grilled ham and cheese sandwiches and burgers. And the McLain's Restuarant had a really good hot beef sandwich.

My mom used to manage the Gold Bond Gift Store so I have lots of memories from that store. And I used to work at the Reynold's Furniture Store.

And I remember buying penny candy at Fermin's when it used to be a little grocery store. The old kindergarten was just down the street.

My how things have changed!

Bingham - I had a nice boy named Lonnie/ Lonny Bingham in my grade, fact we were a little sweet on each other in about the 5th or 6th grade ... are you related, HogHunter?

My mom worked at the Faucett's chiropractor clinic when I was in high school and JoAnn's fabric store when I was in Jr High. I worked at Mitchells my sophmore and junior years - and spent it as fast as I earned it! LOL

How are the Mitchells owners, the Widdesses? Are they still in business? My brother was good buds with their eldest son, Mark.

It's so fun to meander memory lane with y'all!

Oooooooooooh, Cord, I'll bet you know my last name because my parents taught the Jr High church group at Monahans Babtist. I think they knew just about every teen in town back in the day. Mom still talks about the good times they had teaching that class. They taught for about 10 years. Does that ring a bell?

Oh, I'm very sorry. I misread and assumed the 'n'.

Did you have siblings? For some reason the name Cord strikes a chord (:D ) but I can't figure out why. hhhmmm... I'll have to look for my year books. Maybe they're in the boxes up in the attic. I built this house over 4 years ago and I STILL have some unpacked boxes.*rolling eyes*

Mitchells was always high. They gave the area ranchers and businesses accounts though, which for them made it worth the higher prices. They were also closer for the shoppers living in that area and on further out.

I wonder if I still have those year books. It's been so many years and so many moves during them.

Has the Monahans ISD gone 21st century and loaded the years online? That would be so fantastic. hmm... bet they haven't. LOL

Tell me who you hung out with?

Counts, thanks for the site tip.

I visited the site and learned that Joe McShane is deceased, as is Billy Steinam. I went all the way through grade school, jr high and part of high school with those boys. I googled Joe and found that he was murdered. I didn't have the heart to google Billy, too.

God, how bloody awful.

Markie, don't let it get you down. I left Monahans in 63 and every time I run across or talk to someone from there I find out there are less of us. Did not see a reunion for your class, even though you did not graduate from MHS, you should stir up one. I do not know who to get in touch with, but in the Dallas area there is a group of Monahans exes that used to occasionly get together. Later......

Ahhh.. the 1950's. One would have had to have been there to experience an era of true innocence: no war, no drugs, no internet, no cell phones, no computers, actually no tv until mid 50's...but we had that hip wigglin' Elvis Presley! I'm not sure we even knew, or cared, who the President of the US was. The guys all had flat tops or duck tails; the girls wore their pony tails, usually with a scarf tied around it and penny loafers (with a real penny inserted). In high school girls could only wear blue jeans once a week (on Friday). Other days it was dresses or skirts/blouses. Shoot, who cared? We were all pretty much in the same boat financially.
And round n round the Dingo we went.

The good times. No cares, no worries. A trip to the Dingo could solve all problems. Not a perfect world but you could not have convinced me otherwise.
