It appears that "Concerned Citizen" has most of his facts right, but the MPD claims they didn't pay for the fences. I guess MBSA must of fronted the fences with the Blaze like the other affiliations to the MPD not associated to the MPD like the new football team.

Seems like Mayor Joe is losing control of his flock. Siwinski and Labriola have started to show some backbone of late including not rolling over and playing dead for Mayor Joe and his friends from France. Mayor Joe made it clear a few weeks ago that he brought the French Market to Mokena 10 years ago and was set on bringing them back. He was truly upset and uncomfortable at the March 12 board meeting when the French Market contract was up for renewal and the vote got tabled. It's very interesting that almost everyone on the board voted to table it except Trustee Metanias. Who, by the way, clearly demonstrated that he did not understand the details of the now infamous no compete clause in the contract.

It is very plain to see that Mayor Joe shifted with the wind when it became evident he couldn't get the French Market contract renewed. Handing it off to local management was the right move. It should have been done sooner.

Well its been done with smoke and mirrors in town forever, so I am not going to get to fired up over this vote.
As for local control of the market, I'm not sure about that yet. Yes I agree with the concept of local control. However I would have like to have seen some experience in running a market and the group to have some contacts for getting vendors. I understand time was short and that was the problem. Again not well thought out.
Then there is the matter of closing Front St. every Saturday from the entrances to the Metra lot. That is effectively shutting Front St from Wolf Rd to Mokena St.. Otherwise you will have traffic cutting through the lot where people are parking and walking to get to the market. Others who have turned onto the street with no intention of going to the market will have to just use the lot as a cut through to continue down Front St. I see problems a plenty there. Also what time will the street get closed down and reopened. The old market was set up on Friday evenings and then taken down around 2pm on Saturday. And any time you hold an event on the street that people are normally used to driving down, you increase the risk of someone driving into the event being held on the street. Whether that be a confused or elderly driver, drunk or just reckless driver. I'm sorry but I see problems with the whole idea out on the street. Why take chances when you could have the market elsewhere. I sincerely hope that this part of the idea is revisited and reconsidered. And does the insurance cover the event being held on a public roadway and if so does this increase the cost of the insurance.

And what about the kids who normally go down Front st on bikes and skateboards. Where do they fit in. Do they now have to go around the market. Through the Metra lot. Or do they have to walk the bikes and skateboards through the market. Again I see nothing but more headaches and unneeded problems arising from this on the street market.

For special events, closing a street is fine and then you use ESDA to help control the traffic and set up barricades. But every Saturday from May through October.

It's time to vote out Mokena's fat a s s mayor and village board. Our town is a laughing stock to surrounding towns. We are going broke and there is no economic growth. Just empty strip malls. Come on Mokena we need new leadership.
And John Downs too. All they have is excuses for everything. Frankfort is thriving. New Lenox is thriving. Tinley Park is thriving. But Mokena with these idiots is going nowhere. WE NEED NEW LEADERSHIP.

So good to hear that Mokena has a double A bond rating. What I don't understand is the mayor saying he would rather have a AA bond rating then a new car dealership. Has he gone mad? How can a sitting mayor who has failed to bring meaningful commercial development to Mokena make such an ignorant and ridiculous statement? Maybe this is part of the problem with the lack of commercial growth here. Successful businesses hear such things and head the other way. This man's thought process and huge ego are now impossible to ignore. The current trustees just might be able to do a better job with the right person at he helm. Not trying to disrespect the man but he is in over his head. And I am not a terrorist.

What do you expect from the fat a s s mayor. He's a plumber and has head in too many sewers and ejector pump holes. He as stupid as they come. Time for a new mayor. He's a schister. He's full of dung from the sewer wells.

The Mayor has little trust that he people of Mokena
can do anything without his help.Everyoe on the board was for the French staying with the exeption
of Swinsky and Labriola. John Mazzarona was a statesman when he tabled the motion. After Joe saw the wind blowing against him,he convinced his
minions to vote for the merchants to run the market. Thank goodness because the market looks like it something we all can be proud of.

Answering The Way I See It -- The closing of the street in this section of town does not cause a great interference in business with any of us - we have our backdoors to have parts delivered and so on.-- If you care to come down about 1:00 P.M. on Saturday you will see a quick and clean cleanup of the street - usually completed by1:30 P.M.-2:00P.M. at the latest. One thing we do not do to the users of the Metra Lot is to close off the section at the west end from 6:00 P.M. Friday night to and thru 3:00 P.M. Saturdays as was done with the French Market and also the chance if you worked late and had your vehicle parked in that section that it would be towed and you would have to pay to reclaim your vehicle plus find out where it had been relocated to.-- Shortness of time - was not our doing - we initially contacted the Village last August 2011 to start discussions on obtaining a new promoter for the Market. We were met with "The contract doesn't run out until next year - May 2012 - so we have time." They next contacted us in March of 2012 with a date for a meeting - the next day at 1:00 P.M.We were there with four business people to meet with the Village. Their idea of a plan was to resign with the French Market people for a five year contract with a 1 year no compete clause. We objected as did the residents of the Village at the Village Board meeting thus setting in motion the proposal put together by the Merchants - at the last minute - and finally voted upon by the Village. Not our fault.Next statement -- The closing of the street was at the determination of the Village since the French Market people have control over usage of the Metra lot for a period of three years which was included in their ten year contract. I have never heard of that type of inclusion in a contract but it was voted on by the Board and the Mayor at that time. The street is closed down at 5:30 A.M. and reopened at 2:00 P.M. at the latest if not before.- As to the children using the street for a skateboard park and bicycle usage - I believe this street was built for vehicular traffic - we have a skateboard park on the east side of town and this is where they should be skateboarding. We have many playgrounds and parks and skateboard areas for the younger generation - don't the older people (70's) and the mid-older people = 40"s-50's and 60's have some right to a place to congregate also - just asking - Next remark - amount of vendors started at 15 for the first week - 20 plus - second week - 30 - plus 3rd week - 40 plus - 4th week and now this week we are working on 50 plus vendors/civic groups. It is really a shame that we have not produced a market to your exact requirements - but we probably could never come up to your standards - they probably would change whenever the wind changed. I hope that you will take the time to attend the market - stop by the shop and we will take a walk with you to go over anything you might like to talk about pertaining to the market. We have a very good group of very interested people and determined people working on promoting this market - we have weekly meetings at this time to address any and all problems that have or might occur - we have a suggestion box at the table of the Market Master - please put your comments in that box and we will address them.Thank you for your interest.

the "terrorist" remark was used by BI Joe as a red herring effect. what i mean is it is used to mislead or distract the public away from the actual issues at hand.

Ok Char B, the market is getting vendors and I give credit where credit is due. However I am sorry it ruffled your feathers so much that I put forth what I believe to be valid concerns. So since you are again in the mood to chat, let me ask a few more questions.

Who is responsible for the insurance for this market and what are the costs. If the village is paying for any of the insurance, were they also doing so with the old market. Are the costs higher due to the market being held on a public roadway. Was is the villages liability for the market being held on the roadway. How much of a cut does the village get from each vendor. Do the vendors pay sales tax on all items sold, or how does that work. Does the total money paid by the vendors pay for any cost incurred by the village for the market. Thanks in advance for your prompt response to these questions. And keep up the good work. I am not saying you are not trying hard and people seem pleased so thats good.

Mokena continues to sink deeper into a s**t hole. All around us new business producing major sales tax are opening. Tinley, New Lenox, Frankfort are all thriving. How can they be so successful and Mokena isn't?
__
There is one common thread. None of those towns have Mayor "I'm just a plumber" Joe Werner at the helm. He takes credit for anything he can, so he should also accept the fault of Mokena's horrendous lack of commercial development.

Time for the mayor to make a graceful exit before the voters do it for him.

20 % of the voter coming out to vote will never beat the incumbent. If you keep doing the same thing
over and over what makes you think the results will change. Mokena is just plain apathetic.

All of the taxing bodies in Mokena are hurting due to austerity being imposed by economic conditions or previously available sources of funding (mainly the state) having dried up. There are two ways to correct that problem.

The first is to raise taxes. This is an option seen as odious to nearly everyone, and would require a measure of courage, or perhaps foolhardiness that we cannot expect from any elected official.

The second option is to grow revenues through increased business activity, and this, obviously, preferred option is what the Mayor seems to have a problem with. It has to do with making Mokena a place that customers prefer to visit, due to the attractive mix of businesses available and easy access from as wide a region as possible. Much of this will require infrastructure improvement, which is where that AA bond rating might come in handy. Sitting on that rating accomplishes nothing. Investment is required to reap rewards.

The Mayor's attitude seems to arise from a belief that there is no such thing as good spending. He may be right, but there certainly is such a thing as responsible spending and wise investment. If he thinks that the AA rating is simply a trophy that demonstrates low debt and low spending, then why aren't people living in refrigerator cartons offered the same trophy?

Well, here is Susan again - No body person who has never yet appeared in person but only gets on the computer to question - which is (HER)right. The MDMA (Mokena Downtown Merchants Ass'n.) are paying the premium on the insurance billing. MDMA have paid and will continue to pay for the Porta Potties and the supplies used therein. MDMA have accepted donations of water from Berkot's and Speedway and Walgreen's to be given aWAY AS ICE WATER EACH sATURDAY.The Village made the arrangements on their own to close the street. The Village does not get a % from any vendor - the vendors pay their own sales tax (on their own arrangements) - the Village has no cost for the operation of the market other than what they offered and was agreed to by the parties involved. We asked for no considerations. The Village offered to put the 4 signs out weekly. I would rather we did this. The Village had 4 feather banners made and they have been put up on the east and west ends of the market.Again I feel the Market should be self sufficient and provide for itself. We can not put the Market in the Metra parking lot for a period of three years due to the no compete clause signed by the Village with the French Market people but we are just as happy where it is located and the vendors and the majority of the Mokena residents (as they state to us each week) are completely happy with the location. We understand that there will be objections as there always are to any project but to ask about the cost of the insurance that the Association pays for is like asking you how much your paycheck is. If you would like more information please stop by and chat in person (something new for you).
