First, do not believe BP about the limited extent of the problem. BP sells its gas to delivery companies like Atlas, who then goes out and sells the gas to BP branded stations per contract between the station owner and BP, and sells gas to other, unbranded stations depending on the spot market for the day. BP will never know the extent of the problem, but the "jobbers" like Atlas will, and they are not in the guarantee chain, and don't have to answer anyone's questions. Atlas also owns many BP branded stations, so they want to keep it quiet. As with the Gulf oil spill, BP and its affiliates are going to put the lid on the extent of the damage.
