Jim Goes to the Mayor

New York, NY

Did anyone go to the school board meeting tonight? Mayor Baron was trying to get the school to let Pop Warner use Lower Tolpa for practice. They said no, he tried to threaten to take the park away for football practice, and stormed out. Totally embarrassing. Is this what he's been working on all this time? There aren't any more pressing issues around here?

The park looks terrible ever since they started letting football practices happen there. I won'e even get into the screaming and yelling child degrading that is done by a certain Pop Warner football coach. Absolutely disgusting!

I was at the meeting and I thought that the Mayor did a wonderful job advocating for the children and proud parents of this community and for the BOARD to turn down a request to use the field for a couple of hours was sad. They even asked him if the pop warner coaches asked around at other schools. Now why would they go to other schools when all of the kids on the team go to Mohawk and they put all of this money and time into the stadium??? To not use it?? Good for him. About time someone who is not afraid to speak up is in that position, things are finally getting done.

the Mohawk school system has shown itself completely incompetent when it comes to sports fields and facilities

just look at the hideous horrible sports grounds constructed behind the elementary school

which fencing contractor was in bed with the BoE to get a lucrative contract for completely unneeded, obtrusive and butt ugly wire fencing running this was and that -- absolutely awful.

the school system wasted millions and millions of dollars on that Fisher School project -- it is disgraceful

and meanwhile those school bozos let the municipal pool which provided a very valuable asset to the community esp. in providing children with swimming skills that could in fact save a life someday 10 years later when some drunk teenager falls off a party barge into Canadarago Lake ---

yes, they let the pool fall into grave disrepair

and now are going to wipe out the pool entirely

depriving many of our children of the opportunity to learn essential skills of how to swim

Mohawk School System + sports and recreation grounds and facilities = multimillion dollar wastes of money and a complete disgrace

give em hell Baron!

You mean like sending municipal workers down to help out with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy? Or getting the Mohawk cemetery looking better than it has in a decade? Or finishing up the street paving projects? Or taking multiple late night calls concerning every type of village business? All while having a full time job and raising a family? How about opening your eyes AND ears and getting involved instead of criticizing something you don't know the whole story to.

I am glad we have a mayor that is involved and willing to stick his neck out for the youth of our village. It gets dark early now, the boys are heading to state competition and need a place to practice, the only one this is hurting is them. The school tears the park up every year for football but letting hte pop warner kids practice a couple hours on their precious field would do what?? I hop he shuts down all practices in the park for the school, with no other options they will have to use their own fields to pracitce on. Or cut all sports when we don't have hte funding anyway.

Congratulations to Mayor Baron for approaching the school regarding this. Wouldn't it be great community spirit/minded to let the pop warner team practice on the field.

The only issue I would see is if one of the boys got hurt, in today's "sue happy" world---the school could get sued.

But again, good for Mayor Baron. Keep up the good work!!

In regards to the "sue happy" people ??
Pop Warner carries its own insurance, they have to in order to be part of the system. Additionally, the school and its facilities are already riders on the policy, because Pop Warner plays its home games behind the High School and had their homecoming under the very same lights.

pop warner is not affiliated with the school.. the board has a responsibility ..lights and maintenance cost money.. the school does not have any

PopWarnerDad--I know Pop Warner carries their own insurance as well as the school having a rider policy. I would love to see the school allow the team to practice on the field. I think it's wonderful to show community support and pride. I believe what the boys are experiencing (as well as their parents) will treasure this forever. It would be great to have that same kind of support from the school.

Regarding the "sue happy" comment---people sue when someone gets hurt. That's what I refer to.

I wish the boys all the best on their quest for a state title. Good luck boys, be proud of your accomplishment.

Well -
You are not getting the facts straight. Lights and mainenance do cost money...BUT...
The village offered to pick up the cost of the lights for the time used, even tho the parents of the kids who would be using them are already providing them with their school tax dollars.
Maintenance would not be an issue. 20 kids for 4 hours? Please. Oh, and on top of that, i would be willing to bet that the school provides NOTHING as far as assistance goes for repairing the Weller Park area.

park lights were contributed, free of charge, by the construction company that one of the parents works for.
Imagine out of the area company having to help out our school's kids....what a great example the board is.

I wish the team all the best. As mentioned in last post---be proud of your achievements!

Being the parent of three Mohawk graduates. I know exactly what you are going through! All three of my kids played school sports, AAU, summer ball and often we had to find alternate spots for the kids to practice.

So PopWarnerDad---I feel for you.

Again, good luck team! Be proud.

I have no children in Mohawk schools now. Hurrah for the Mayor!
Good luck to the Pop Warner kids!
The school board should be ashamed. Let them examine their reasons for deciding against it, they will come up with the same mean and selfishness that prevented the merger. Get the school board voting record publicized, let each board member take responsibility in public for their decisions.
Just like the sole selfish board member who voted against the merger and against going to Albany to merge with Ilion. She has no children currently in school. She knows who she is and her blantant anti-everything opinions.
Can the board be impeached? Can board members be prosecuted, since they "do not act in the villages best interests?" I for one will contribute to the prosecution fund.
