Those of us who use our bikes to get around town have enough hassles from cars without these idiots "helping" our cause:
"The rides are usually well-organized and involve cyclists who follow traffic laws and use lights and horns, police said. However, on Friday, a group of mostly college-age cyclists impeded traffic downtown, yelled at drivers and put themselves in harm's way, Martinez said."
The next time some driver runs you off the road or intentionally buzzes you, you probably have this group of a-holes to blame. Thanks a bunch, UCSC students, for continuing to #$%^ up our town.

I wish I was making a wide right turn in a semi full of cement right now. Way to rally support, idiots.

You can protest all you want but the bottom line is that bicyclists are more vulnerable than those inside of vehicles, be careful, not stupid! BTW: Stay in the bike lane!

I agree with Westside4ecer - I use my bike to commute and really dislike the renegade riders who give all of us a more difficult ride. Wear a helmet, ride with caution and let's all just share the road.

Haha, "Fish" can't spell "riding," or "don't." Back to bed, Nerd.

This journalist writes about the incident as though they were there, which they were not. I suspect that one really would have to have been there in order to know the real story. Here, they're just working off of the police report reflecting one side.
Anyhow, have fun with $4.25 gas if you get 15mpg and need to commute to Watsonville. I hope you don't get laid off either.

I ride a Big Wheel

If all those protesters would trade their bikes in for a "Big Wheel" then they would get the respect from vehicles they deserve. Duh, this is such an easy solution!!!

I get 15 miles to the cyclist and there seems to be enough of them to go around. It does get old scraping the old bike parts out of my front bumper though.

Car drivers act like threatening people is a big joke. If you threaten my saftey while I am riding my bike (with rude or aggressive behavior), I will FILM you with my helmet cam and have your a-s-s busted. I got the helmet cam when a car tried to run in to my friend, and then returned with a cop (who sided with the car driver and ticketed my friend for breaking the car mirror).

If SCPD recognizes this recurring event as an "organized protest", then they would also realize that the organizers would require proper city permits for public assemblies.

Shave them all, soap them and rinse them, give them nice haircuts, change their majors to economics, chemistry, and engineering and for god sakes start doing some critical thinking instead of some critical dumb mass.

Looks to me that cylclists lost a lot of sympathy for their cause with this action. Blocking up the streets as a deliberate action demonstarates that they dont want to share the roads with motorists but want all the road to themselves. For the genuine cyclists who try and make a point civilly I feel sorry for you all your good work just went up in smoke, and you had a long way to go before this stupid event, looking at the results of the recent poll as you are a very small minority group when it comes to the road use issue.

Of course Bikes have the right to claim the full lane, under Calif. vehicle code. But being right can lead to being dead right. I bike more miles than I drive, but I stay off of the more dangerous roads. And my brain is bigger than my balls, so I know better than to challenge a vehicle which may be over 100 times as heavy as my bike. Don't let your pride make you a victim of a mindless driver. I'll be so glad when the requirement for hands-free cell phones goes into effect on July 1st. One problem down, a dozen or so more to go.

I prefer to ride on dirt....no cars to worry about. The cyclists who think this is going make people sympathetic to their cause are wrong. 9 times out of 10 bikers are not following basic traffic laws, they run stop signs and red lights and then expect drivers to cede the way. Face it the cars will win in an altercation. Stop trying to be mini San Francisco and get a clue.
