Local: Orange Cove chief causes a brief stir

~~~~~
Victor Lopez, the longtime mayor of Orange Cove, seemed to drop a bombshell this week during Fresno County budget hearings.
Lopez stepped up to lobby the Board of Supervisors for more money for the Sheriff's Department. During his speech, he compared himself to departing Supervisor Bob Waterston, who is serving out his final year on the board.
The audience seemed stunned. Had Lopez -- mayor of Orange Cove for more than two decades -- just announced his retirement from public office?
Nope.
Lopez, 65, said he was simply trying to explain that he had no plans to seek higher office. He was glad Waterston asked him to clarify his remarks.
Thanks Fresno Bee for making room for a headline about a non-event!!
Thankfully southern Fresno County has a newspaper publisher that devotes the resources, time and space to report ALL the news worth checking out --- Mid-Valley Publishing has five newspapers covering Reedley, Sanger, Fowler, Parlier and yes, even Orange Cove/Squaw Valley.
Where was the Fresno Bee when the "Reedley Exponent" and the "Orange Cove and Mountain Times" published information about the investigation by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, regarding improper, or possibly illegal, bidding for contract work at the Orange Cove BMX Park?
Where is the Fresno Bee when documented incidents of "Conflicts of interest" by Lopez for financial gain by his son David Lopez ($7,887 [4+ years of retroactive pay]), and his own car allowance ($3,600 per year). Lopez was the sole advocated pleading the David Lopez case at the December, 2007 Council meeting. Why should the City of Orange Cove pay Lopez a car allowance -- his salaried "day job" if with the Fresno County EOC ($50,000+/year package)? Lopez used questionable data in a memo from the City Administrator to justify the car allowance.
Neither Lopez or Little seem concerned about violation(s) of various California Government Codes in matters of "conflict of interest" or "nepotism".
As for Lopez running for higher office -- did you buy that line?? There are not a lot of "higher offices" available to high school drop outs with a very narrow agenda.
There is one actuality -- Lopez is an expert at self-promotion.
As far as the mayoral election in 2010 ... there is already an elected official in Orange Cove that can and will defeat his attempts to for re-election.
