Will anyone remember her come January 1, 2011?

That will be the 25th anniversary of the death of Arches Ranger Joan Swanson by gunshot wound. I do remember. Is anything being planned by the NPS to honor her memory?

I'm Joan's cousin and I'm trying to write a piece on Joan as a last request from her mom (my aunt).

Wow. Every now and then I check topix to get information about little towns I used to frequent. This particular thread has got my attention. This is a very controversial subject in Moab. I don't want to say too much on here, but if you will leave me an email address where I can reach you, I would like to discuss this with you. Seriously.

I'm not sure how to leave an e-mail address without everyone getting it, but give me a few days to figure something out.

To Joan's Cousin: I seem to remember that the police quickly ruled suicide, but there were rumors there was much more to the story. Her boyfriend was a writer and artist, and he was good friends with the county prosecutor. You might want to contact him. His name was Jim Stiles. I heard the prosecutor passed away a few years ago.

Thanks for the information. Jim was my aunt's #1 suspect. I doubt I'd want to contact him directly, if you know what I mean. But any idea where he is? If you have any other leads or info, feel free to contact me through my e-mail. Again, thanks.

You might want to try and contact Jim Stiles' younger brother. He was a prosecutor in Kentucky at the time Joan died, and I seem to recall some local talk that our Moab prosecutor had sent him a copy of some of your sister's case file to review with some homicide detectives he worked with in Kentucky. I understood he got things stirred up here because it was his opinion that the evidence wasn't consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was from some town near Lexington Kentucky. I don't recall his first name, and I don't even know for sure if he is still alive, but I heard he and his brother fell out years ago and no longer speak. He might be worth trying to locate if you're really interested.

Joan was a classmate of mine at Euless Jr. High in Euless. Her mother was my teacher as well. I found out about Joan just recently from some of our classmates. How horrible!
