I want to make sure that any women who were at the reform school can find the rest of us if they want to check in with us or join in our search for the school's history and our experiences. We have a yahoo group.

Also, can anyone tell me who was Superintendent before Mrs Carter?
I have been researching Iowa Archives.

Theresa,
Is your mother still able to talk about Her stay?
If she is not computer savvy and you are able to talk to her about her stay there, maybe you can tell her what we are doing. We will be having an article soon in the Des Moines Register about the things girls experienced while they were there.

We do not have a lot of testimony from gals that were there earlier than 1966. We have a lot of varying experiences and most of them were not great.

Let me know if she has ever told you her story or still can.

We can talk more if you would like. My email address is moonlstr@moonlstr.com

My sister and I were there in 1966 and 1967. It was a prison not reform school. I will never forget the place and the old ladies that ran it.
I heard Carter was fired from the place for abusing the girls. I was there for 9 months my sister was there for 6.

Looking for anyone who was in this school in the mid 1950's. I'm searching for information about my mother, Carol Jean Weist. She had a baby boy that was taken from her and I'm looking for him. Please help if you have any information

I had to scrub the hospital and kirk dumped the water all over the floor and laugh and said do it again I hope you except me on your yahoo because for so long this shit really haunted me to the point of nightmares of being locked up even after I was married I did get them to stop after I told my Dad off and cried for hours and ask why letting it all out is what got me free of my worst dream well get back to me I went to your yahoo and am still waiting thank you a lot of stuff that I had pushed deep was brought to lite when all the other girls talked about what it was like for them and I remembered it over again but this time it could not destroy me

I am looking for evidence my grandmother existed. Doing the family tree is hard when your grandmother doesn't exist until a phone book listing with your grandpa. Her legal name was LaVina Virginia Sample, but she may have used the last name Peters or some spelling of Ayers. She was born in 1914 and supposedly had a baby out of wedlock sometime between 1928 to 1932. Hence, because of the time, they snatched her baby, and adopted it out. Maybe your mom or someone else remembers her. She was a foster kid of the time, Maybe my grandmother was there in 1925?( A reform school by age 11 wouldn't surprise me. That kind of thing seems to be genetic in my family even to modern times..lol) Any info would help.

i was in mitchellville in 61-63 and it was not good memories, i was in cottage 3 miss helfry was house mother , then mary massachusy and i tried to run away, got caught b-4 we could cross the road, they put me in lockup for thirty days with nothing but the walls to look at, thought id go stir crazy, i just wanted to go home, they put me there because i didnt want to go to school so what do they do put me in school in am then laundry pm then kitchen, i was so tried and then friday night miss kirk called to have me curl her hair, as the cosmotology girls was no longer supported, so they closed that class down, when i finally got to go back to my dad's and mom's house i was not leaving ever again and i didnt, and was really backwards over the whole ordeal, took me til 1980 to build up any trust for anyone after that , some of the names we were called , and how'd ya like the silence in the dining room, no talking allowed
a lutheran minister who taught class there told me to write a letter and i did , in the letter i wrote my only crime was to not go to school, i hated it as i had to wear hand me downs, holes in my shoes , kids would laugh and make fun of me, i just plain hated it, my mother had 7 of us children yet at home and the other 6 were boys, so it was tough, he then took the letter to the govenor and he ordered my release, the minister then got me a job at a root beer stand close to my house, he called and said ride with me to mitcheville to show them how good youve done, i wanted to see miss helphry but she didnt answer her door, i left iowa in 1969 i was working for the state of iowa when i left, saw miss kirk on the elevator, she was shocked to see me there, but i said hello and got off the elevator, and bid her a good day

I was there in 64. Dang, I have been so eager to find someone who was there when I was. I was in cottage 5 before they finished cottage 4 and we moved into the new cottage. Cottage 5 was so old. We had chamber pots in our rooms. I got assigned to rinse them all out in the mornings. I was so grossed out. My experience with Miss Kirk was one of a sexual sadist.
I too spent time in lock up 3 weeks, for talking about boys.

2011 ? Seriously. You evidently were there when it was a prison. Well that says a lot about how bad it was for us who were there when it was a reform school at age 13-17. It was bad, and no matter how hard one tried to make the best of it, there was always hell to pay one way or the other. Most of the girls sent there had not even committed a crime.
I really am glad you found a place that made your life better. Every one deserves that.
