Why do people spout off without having all the facts?
Do you really think the district would fire him without a well-documented file of violations? Do you really think the first disciplinary action would be firing?
Protect our kids, I say!
Mommers; I absolutely DO think they would fire him without cause. They are protecting and incompetant, ineffective principal. Ryan Haraughty has WAIVED his right to privacy and willingly opened his file. He has 6 write-ups in 11 years, all the same degree as the final one. He is being honest and open. The district is trying to make the public think there was so much more, just to protect this nutjob in the front office. There is a history of abuse of teachers with this principal going back to her time as an assistant princ. at Shawnee Mission East. They just keep moving her around. The teachers filed a 135 page complaint with the NEA two years ago, and got nowhere. They and 100's of parents have complained and been lied to, retaliated against and shut down. She is a dangerous administrator and Ryan was caught in her fire. 100% a personality conflict.

Seriously? You think that a district with such a strong reputation as SM would fire someone over 1 comment? Anyone who signs a contract realizes that there is a procedure to follow when there is disciplinary action. It takes years to fire a teacher, especially one who is tenured and a member of the teacher's union. Come on! This is NOT the Kansas City school board. This is a district that stands by its commitment to the students and protects its teachers from exactly these kinds of invented scenarios. Perhaps the teacher should tell the whole truth instead of what he only wants people to hear.
This teacher HAS told the truth. Unable to attend the meetings on district property, his family (a family of educators) spoke for him. They listed one by one the infractions (totalling 6 or 7 in 11 years) for all to hear. He has waived his right to privacy and been willing to have his file made public. The district is hiding behind the privacy issue to cover their butts. Ryan has never made the claim it was only one incident. He spoke to the "final" one on the news and they edited out the others. However, in a public forum those others were brought to light and none even came close to Florida-gate! All were minor, stupid write-ups by a crazy administrator. Who, by the way, filed fraudulant evaluations on teachers she never even evaluated. All of this went into a report to the NEA who did nothing. There is ugly stuff going on at Mission Valley and anyone with a child heading there needs to speak out and soon!

Mission Valley Mom, it sounds like Ryan would have grounds for a lawsuit against the school district/school board. My kids all graduated from Shawnee Mission East, all went through Mission Valley but only one of them had Haraughty for science, so I don't know any inside information to the extent that it sounds like you do. I absolutely think if he appeals his firing and is not reinstated that he has no choice but to file a lawsuit. I knew there was something going on with Ostmeyer (she came on the scene when my youngest was at Mission Valley) but I didn't know about her track record in the school district. I am hoping there is a parent at Mission Valley or Shawnee Mission East who is an attorney and will stand up for Haraughty or at least advise hime who to retain.

My gosh, I am 50+ years old and I remember my middle and high school teachers saying slightly risque things from time to time and they weren't fired. It's not like they were molesting students or propositioning them, they just taught with a little sense of humor just like Haraughty and kids respond to that and connect and LEARN. I know a couple of people who had John Haraughty, Ryan's dad, for science at Shawnee Mission East and they have said he taught with that same sense of humor and he was also an excellent teacher.

I hope for the best for the teacher and students. The students deserve a great teacher like this one and a better school administration

I wonder if in their rush to get the teacher fired the parents in question ever thought how the label of "thats the asshole who got everyones favorite teacher fired" will effect their child for the next 5 to 7 yrs until graduation.

Becuase trust me students dont show up to a schoolboard meeting to protest a teacher getting fired unless he is the best fucking teacher they ever had.

The parents who got him canned just open their kid up to half a decade of harassment and bullying. Not to mention with no teacher or school staff member who wannt to keep their job will ever say anything to him of at all possible simply to avoid saying anything inaproprate.

Great parenting skills people - in one move you turned turned all your childs classmates into enimes and gaurenteed no faculty member will want anything to do with them.

This is EXACTLY the kind of warning signs that appear AFTER something terrible has happened to a child. Pedophiles typically place themselves in jobs where they are around young people. If this behavior has happened before, he should be fired.
I am so sick of the child molester hysteria. Brenda, your kids are far more likley to be molested by a member of your own familly then a teacher. They are more likley to be molested by a FEMALE teacher then a male teacher. They are more likley to be stuck by lightning three time in one day then be molested by a male teacher.

Statistically speaking YOU are more likley to molest your children then a school teacher

The parents of this child need to make themselves known and explain how this threatened thier little snowflake.

Mr. Heraughty should demand to know who has made the accusations. I support him 100% in his fight against this ridiculous over-zealousness and over-compensation.
