whereas I'm the opposite. I believe in pushing the number of folks up. to have a better chance at our species surviving the eruption of a super-volcano
.
since when the next time a super volcano goes off. there will be a sharp decrease in population.in all areas. a nuclear winter pales in comparison to what could happen.
.
http://www.propertycommunity.com/property-in-... It has been proven by scientists that super volcanic eruptions have occurred 2.1 million, 1.3 million and 640,000 years ago across the Yellowstone Park area and one may be due any time now (give or take 100,000 years!). There is evidence of substantial change in the local landscape and the onslaught of a mini ice age over the years, which at one point was thought to have pushed the human race to near extinction.
.
http://rense.com/general31/overdue.htm The last eruption of a super volcano was in Toba, Sumatra, 75,000 years ago. It had 10,000 times the explosive force of Mount St. Helens and changed life on Earth forever. Thousands of cubic kilometres of ash was thrown into the atmosphere - so much that it blocked out light from the sun all over the world. 2,500 miles away 35 centimetres of ash coated the ground. Global temperatures plummeted by 21 degrees. The rain would have been so poisoned by the gasses that it would have turned black and strongly acidic. Man was pushed to the edge of extinction, the population forced down to just a couple of thousand. Three quarters of all plants in the northern hemisphere were killed.
.
http://toba.arch.ox.ac.uk/edu.htm The Earth was already inhabited by a number of species closely related to us, such as Homo neanderthalensis (the Neanderthals) in Europe, and Homo erectus and Homo floresiensis (sometimes called the ‘hobbits’) in southeast Asia. All of these survived Toba, but some archaeologists have claimed that almost all the anatomically modern humans (our direct ancestors) were killed by the environmental effects the volcano caused, with the remaining people surviving in refuges in Africa. This scenario is based on data from genetics, and because it suggests that people were narrowed down from many to very few numbers, it is known as a genetic ‘bottleneck’.

Not to judge, but that is your primary concern?

While I see Sangelia's point, I think we have a much better chance of killing off ourselves than dying from some natural apocalypse.

There are thousands of nukes on Earth, who knows what kind of bio-weapons, defective humans who might use them and the one I think is more likely, mechanical or electronic failure. Just a few fried circuits at the missile silo or nuclear power plant, or a bad liquid nitrogen freezer at the bio weapons lab, and oops! We are our own worst enemies.

true. we are more likely to kill ourselves off due to how we humans are. but one does have to count in what nature does throw at us. via our own planet. as well as from off planet.
.
thing is, one of those volcanoes. it has a rest period of between 600,000 years to 800,000 between eruptions. thing is, it has been about 640,000 years since it's last one.
.
plus when you add in the factor of outer space debris like meteors and asteroids. it does go up.
