Antoine Winfield released by Minnesota Vikings

Vikings general manager Rick Spielman now has freed up money for a serious run at free-agent wide receivers Mike Wallace and Greg Jennings. In so doing, Spielman severely has hampered his team's ability to make a run at the playoffs for a second consecutive season.

Jerome Simpson, Minnesota Vikings agree to contract

Vikings have reached an agreement with Jerome Simpson on a one-year contract. ESPN first reported the news.

Phil Loadholt, Minnesota Vikings strike contract

As first reported by ESPN Twin Cities' Tom Pelissero, the Vikings have agreed to a multiyear contract with Loadholt. The Vikings later announced that Loadholt had re-signed, although they didn't provide terms of the deal.

Loadholt, a fifth-year pro, is an outstanding run blocker who helped key Adrian Peterson's 2,000-yard season. Pelissero said the Vikings increased their offer to Loadholt to more than $5 million per season before the agreement was reached.

That sum makes Loadholt one of the highest-paid right tackles in the league, but Minnesota did not want to lose him to an NFC North rival. The Chicago Bears reportedly were interested in Loadholt, and that interest might have inspired the Vikings to extend their offer a little further.

Peterson has reached a new level of NFL greatness. He now gets the guys around him paid.

John Carlson's contract reportedly restructured
The deal with Carlson reportedly gives the Vikings the flexibility to retain him and pursue their other aims in free agency; Carlson will retain $1.2 million of guaranteed money in his base salary and could make the rest of his scheduled $2.9 million base salary back through incentives, according to 1500ESPN.com .

Jamarca Sanford 'coming home' to Minnesota
General manager Rick Spielman said last month the Vikings wanted to re-sign Sanford, praising his development as a player and as a team leader.

Jerome Felton is coming back, too.

The Minnesota Vikings re-signed their Pro Bowl fullback on Tuesday afternoon, an NFL source said.

"Thanks to MN VIKINGS!!" Felton wrote on Twitter. "I'm back and excited about the future!!!!"

Terms were not immediately available.
