I only need safe! It's a fun discussion topic on Topix as long as you're on the ground..

When you are a passenger flying across a ocean on a Dreamliner with a "contained fire" going on in its belly it looks like a lot less fun.

As if 2013 wasn't bad enough, 2014 isn't starting out very well for Boeing either:

The Federal Aviation Administration is ordering inspections of the Boeing 767, one of the aircraft maker's most popular commercial jets, to check for problems that it says could cause loss of control of the planes.

Very disturbing a $250,000,000 777 jetliner with 239 people onboard can simply disappear.

Maybe the airlines should all subscribe to OnStar from GM to track their planes?

For a small fee OnStar uses GPS in the vehicle to constantly know where it is and can at any time transmit the location to ground stations which are Onstar dispatch centers.

Why can't they be used for aircraft?

The town joker can't conceive a device that upon being exposed to an abnormal event sends an alarm to a satellite which sends it to a command center, such as Boeings.

Abnormal event:

Loss of cabin pressure.

Concussion in the plane, explosion or gunfire.

Uncontrolled decent.

Loss of an engine.

Abnormal roll.

Flip.

The device would only transmit latitude and longitude on a repeating stream of data.

Far from rocket scientist stuff, everything in terms of alerts is already available from current systems.

A union member called it “a new low” in employee-company relations

Boeing Co. CEO Jim McNerney apologized Friday for saying the aerospace giant’s employees “will still be cowering” when he turns 65 next month, and he therefore sees no reason to retire.

"Jim's" tenure at 3M set the tone for Boeing. He is a loser!! A one percent guy who should be working the highways on pot hole duty.
