Bob Sansevere: Critics of Vikings draft pick Christian Ponder may be the ones reaching

Full story: TwinCities.com

That's the word that kept coming up after the Vikings picked Christian Ponder. If you read newspaper or online stories or listened to several radio and TV stations in the hours and days after Ponder was selected with the NFL draft's 12th overall pick, that's what you saw or heard.

the draft is over, im done debating whether it was a good pick or not. im excited to see what ponder has at an nfl level and hope that he can put our offensive weapons to good use. what worries me more is our offensive line trying to protect him. we didn't really get anyone in the draft that looks like a starter and last time i checked we were not very strong at any position last year.

I'm an FSU fan and a fan of Ponder's. Just the same, we reached at QB with the 12th pick. Now to put this into perspective. Given the early run on QB's, the Vikings felt that they needed to act and get their potential starter. They attempted to trade back and could not get the right deal. They acted. In a normal year, this pick would have been ridiculous. However, in a year without F/A signings this might have been the correct choice - might have. The truth is, all QB's are big gambles and we really won't know if Ponder was worth the price until he gets on the field.

Bob Jamarcus Russell was a projected 1st pick, he went 1st but then bombed.
Ponder was a projected late first, early second round pick. Taking him at number 12 is a reach no matter how you look at it.
Hope it works out, but I would have taken Dalton.

Everyone other than the coach is just another arm chair wannabes. Everyone is an expert until given the actual job to do. Here everyone sounds like they know what they are talking about, but none has ever done the actual job like being a NFL coach, so their and my opinion don't mean jack.

Spot on Bob. Some of these baffoons make the kid out to be some macaroni armed loser. You don't get to be Florida State QB with no talent.

True, college talent does not always translate to NFL talent. But everyone needs to take a chill pill and lets see what he can do. He certainly can't be worse than Jackson. And who knows, maybe we have some Wildcat formations with Webb around too.

Either way this new coaching staff knows how to handle rookie QBs and they sure as heck are going to be more creative offensively. Of course you couldn't get much worse than Chillys KAO.

I'd love to see a breakdown of all Kiper's predictions over the past decade or so to see how many times he's been completely wrong - I suspect he has more misses that hits...

I totally agree with Bob. These so called "experts" are not the ones who spent time with Christian Ponder or have vetted him in a long process of finding a QB for this team. I'm not saying he will be the "one" that will take the Vikings to the Super Bowl, but he deserves an opportunity to prove himself! I hope these "experts" all have to "eat crow" and he will turn out to be an elite NFL QB!

C'mn Bob, clearly Kiper does his homework. As another poster pointed out the "reach" comments have less to do with Ponder's potential talent and everything to do with his draft value, which was second round. Now, the vikes desperately needed a qb and i hope this kid is the one - time will tell.

I can't stand Eddie Munster anymore. He's the ESPN "NFL Draft Guru" and is almost always wrong. He does do his homework and it shows (he talks a mile a minute) but it doesn't mean he's doing it correctly. He even seems to be getting upset when someone disagrees with him on draft day...it's kind of "reality tv-ish". But seriously, does he just laugh going to the bank when he cashes checks knowing full well that he doesn't get his picks right save for a few? Maybe he honestly thinks he knows everything about the draft...either way, he's very annoying imo

Eddie Munster, ha, that's pretty funny actually! He, along, with the majority of the so called "experts" agree that Pounder was drafted way too early. They coulda got him later while addressing more important needs at #12. But the Queens don't do that. That's why they never and never will win.

Blocking the Lions from getting Nick Fairley was the best thing the Vikings could've done in that situation.

Reaching has nothing to do with whether Ponder will be a good player. It has to do with maximizing your draft position and evaluating talent in terms of how other teams grade. If Ponder turns into a Hall of Famer it's still a reach if we could have traded down and still gotten him while adding additional picks, or taken him with our 2nd round pick.

Is it a necessity for packer fans to put down other people to feel better about themselves? Every time I look on these boards there is a put down by a packer fan. It doesn't make you win more by showing your lower intelligence.

I've been a Vikings fan all my life of 40+ years. Now that favre is gone I actually kind of like the packers team - Rodgers is awesome, Jennings is legit, Matthews and the D are tought. It's the fans I could do without.

From what I've seen Ponder is at least as good as Matt Cassel and the Chiefs went to the playoffs last year.

Yes, we should absolutely trust the Vikings' ability to rate college quarterbacks after wasting a pick on Jackson in 2006. Ponder may end up being a good QB, but anyone who says it wasn't a reach has no business covering the NFL.
