Vikings punter Chris Kluwe backs up Ravens' Ayanbadejo
By Michael Gold
The Baltimore Sun
11:44 a.m. EDT, September 8, 2012
Linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo wasn't the only athlete stunned by a letter from a Maryland politician urging the Ravens to silence the outspoken Ayanbadejo due to his support for same-sex marriage.
In an open response to the letter written by Maryland Del. Emmett C. Burns Jr., a Democrat from Baltimore County, Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe wrote that he was "ashamed and disgusted" by Burns' views and characterized the delegate as "mind-bogglingly stupid."
In an expletive-laden letter posted on sports blog Deadspin, Kluwe - who has been similarly vocal to Ayanbadejo as a proponent for gay marriage - took particular issue with Burns' assertion that political views have "no place in a sport."
"I can't even begin to fathom the cognitive dissonance that must be coursing through your rapidly addled mind right now," the punter wrote. "The mental gymnastics your brain has to tortuously contort itself through to make such a preposterous statement are surely worthy of an Olympic gold medal."
"I can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero effect on your life," Kluwe later wrote. "They won't come into your house and steal your children.... They won't even overthrow the government in an orgy of hedonistic debauchery because all of a sudden they have the same legal rights as the other 90 percent of our population.
In response to complaints about his use of profanity, Kluwe subsequently posted an edited version of the letter on his blog on TwinCities.com .
In addition to Kluwe, NFL Players Association president and former Terps and Ravens cornerback Domonique Foxworth and Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley have also voiced their support for Ayanbadejo's freedom of expression.

Viking Chris Kluwe fights for gay rights

Punters and kickers, for as much as they try to blend in with their teammates, are just different than other football players. And there's nothing wrong with being different.

Vikings punter Chris Kluwe did something not many football players would do this month, speaking up in support of same-sex marriage. And he's continuing to do it, taking the flag for gay rights and running with it. He wants Minnesota voters to block an amendment in November that would further strengthen an already existing ban on same-sex marriage by writing it into the Constitution.

"I'd like to win some votes against the amendment," Kluwe told the Associated Press. "It would permanently change the state Constitution. Who are we to say we should decide what our children should do on this subject? If we're not the generation to make gay marriage legal, why should we prevent our children having a say on the matter?"

This month, Kluwe became a national figure when he wrote a scathing open letter to a Maryland state lawmaker who criticized the Ravens' Brendon Ayanbadejo for supporting gay marriage (it's also on Maryland's ballot.)

"Why do you hate the fact that other people want a chance to live their lives and be happy, even though they may believe in something different than you or act different than you?" Kluwe wrote to delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr.

Burns had written to Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, essentially asking him to issue Ayanbadejo a gag order.

"I find it inconceivable that you are an elected official of Maryland's state government," Kluwe wrote Burns. "Your vitriolic hatred and bigotry make me ashamed and disgusted to think that you are in any way responsible for shaping policy at any level."

Kluwe then went on to cite the First Amendment, and every person's right to freedom of speech. Kluwe clearly exercised his right and there is a lot of profanity in the letter - after all, Kluwe is a football player and he gets a little fired up - so if you want to read it in its entirety, it's on Deadspin.com .

Kluwe, 30, has a gay brother-in-law, "and I'd like to see him be able to get married someday," he told reporters.

There have been no active athletes in the four major sports who have come out of the closet and into the locker room, but Kluwe doesn't think it would be a big deal anymore.

(Cases in point: The 49ers were the first NFL team to record a video condemning antigay violence and bullying, and Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski said recently that he would be cool with a gay teammate.)

"For me personally, what I'm seeing is guys who are willing to live and let live," Kluwe said. "They don't really care about it, and at the end of the day when we're in the locker room, it's what can you do to help us win on Sunday?"

If you read Kluwe's FULL letter, it was more about the right to freedom of speech than it was the right for gays to marry. Although he did talk about that as well.

I know you are not Slew. You are the poster on much of the NSP thread, obsessed with this Schmahl guy. Now, you seem to be obsessed with Smart Liberal. I wonder, is it because you think Smart Liberal is Schmahl?

The NFL should not be full of gangbangin jigger murders and felons. The NFL is like prison. You could take your murder (like Ray Lewis) and he could bend Kluwe over in the shower. Just like in prison. Michael Vick turned kweer when he was in the joint. Personally, I could watch a bunch of midgets play the game. As long as they put on a good show. You must realize the caliber of animal in the NFL. These guys would do your Grandmother if she was still warm.
