Folks who get up before dawn to put the turkey in the oven might want to stay up and getting some shopping done. Most Kmart locations will be open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., while Bass Pro Shops are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Gap Inc. also plans to open more than 1,100 of its Banana Republic, Gap and Old Navy stores for varying Thanksgiving hours. Shoppers who didn’t stay up to catch the earliest online deals are likely to find there are even more Thursday, at the time stores open for Black Friday or earlier, says James Brown, director of merchant accounts for comparison site PriceGrabber.com . Wal-Mart announced that shoppers who sign up for emails,“like” its Facebook page or download its mobile app will get early access to some Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving.
Eating your Thanksgiving dinner, however, may need to be done in line to get other store deals. Most Walmart locations will open for Black Friday at 8 p.m. on Thursday, with a first wave of door-busters on toys and home goods, including a Nintendo Wii console for $89. At 10 p.m., the retailer has a second wave of electronics deals, including a $399 iPad 2 that comes bundled with a $75 store gift card. Sears, Kmart and Toys R Us will open their doors at 8 p.m., while Target is an hour later at 9 p.m. Target’s deal to grab is the $49 Nook Simple Touch, says de Grandpre. The popular e-reader originally sells for $99.

More stores and malls are opening at midnight Thursday this year, including Best Buy, Kohl’s and Macy’s. Simon Property Group’s 160 malls will all open at midnight for the first time this year. But there are still a few “late” early openings, including Staples and JC. Penney at 6 a.m. Friday.“This may be the one really good J.C. Penney sale of the year,” says Dworsky, who likes the doorbuster deal of a 13-piece cookware set for $100. Even early-bird retailers plan to introduce more sales in the morning: Kmart plans to close at 3 a.m. and then reopen at 5 a.m. Target plans to offer another round of doorbusters at 4 a.m., and Wal-Mart, at 5 a.m.
Deals on video consoles and fitness equipment will probably be at their best today, says Fridgen. For example, Toys “R” Us will have the Xbox 360 4GB console for $180, bundled with a $50 store gift card. Black Friday weekend is also the rare occassion when Apple discounts its wares, he says, so fans should check for price cuts online and in Apple stores. There are also some great clothing deals in store and online. Bendele points to Target’s starting price of $3 for all kids clothing, and Grandpre says he has spotted a number of price cuts on jeans, including at Old Navy and Wal-Mart.
Experts say some doorbuster-sale items — although tough to snag because retailers usually only stock a handful of them per store — are definitely worth trying for. Best Buy has a 40-inch Toshiba flat-screen TV for $180, says de Grandpre, but his pick is the 60-inch Vizio at Wal-Mart, on sale for $688, from $998.“If I had to buy a TV that day, that’s what I’d buy,” he says. But shoppers who miss a deal in store or want to avoid the crowds entirely may fare better online. Amazon has said it will have that same Vizio at the same price —“but they’re not saying when,” Dworsky says. Other stores, like Staples, usually post many doorbuster deals online at the same time stores open, he says.
