I'd hate to see hime pull a leg muscle chugging down to first.

Might be something Morneau might try as well when he is in a slump.

It is a rare situation indeed when you do not want Thome to be a home run threat. The Twins signed him to be a power hitter, so the shift reduces his batting average by 20 points, so what? He can hit .240 and get over 20 home runs and Jim will have earned his money.

Don't worry, he's like an old Volkswagen Beetle. They never break down in first gear.

I think it's something to try once in a while. Obviously, you want him to be aggressive and try to pull the ball over the wall. But you also want to keep the other team guessing. All it would take is a couple times of him just attempting to chop the ball to the third base side for teams to lesson the shift on Thome. It's not like teams shift with runners on second or third, so he would still have plenty of home run and RBI chances.
