Geez, I should have been a bus driver. Instead I go to school, get a doctorate, and find myself with student loans, no job, and a nagging wife!

What a classic example of how unions are destroying America. They once served a great purpose -- improving working conditions, helping to enact child labor laws, etc. Now, they are a complete joke (used to cripple business). The City could have hired 40 more drivers for the nearly $2 million it paid in overtime. But it's only our tax money, right?

Good for them! If they are willing to work the hours, they should go for it.

This is just plain wrong. And the thing the article didn't mention is that the retirement pensions that these union jack-offs get is based on their final years of "service"; by working all this overtime, it entitles them to rip off the taxpayer so they can make more in retirement.

Tell your elected officials that you are pissed off and want them to stop giving away YOUR taxes in this manner. Tell them that they will be held liable for such contracts and vote them out of office.

Now if only teachers could make the same pay it would start balancing out in the "fair" department.

How is it possible to make that much per year? At $26 dollars a hour for 40 hours is about $52000 a year, that means he has to work about 90 Hours a week. Is that legal, and is it that safe. How old is this guy.

Oh yea...we're out of money and have to increase your taxes. Stupidity on the part of the city administrators and the public that allows this to happen. Vote for someone with the **** to stop this insanity!! With the unemployment rate soaring, there are plenty of qualified candidates to hire at a living wage and save the taxpayers the unnecessary overtime pay.

It's nice to see Madison is getting it right. Bus drivers do more for a community than mayors, police chiefs or heads of transit systems. They should be earning more. In fact, mayors, police chiefs and heads of transit systems should not be paid positions since these positions only drain from the community. Eliminate them and even more bus drivers could be brought in. You're on the right path, Madison!

Legally, there is nothing wrong with the high pay. But it seems selfish of the unions to do this. You know that a good thing like this will never last; and sooner or later, your union members will pay for one person's enjoyment. I hope it's worth it when they decide to lay off a bunch of drivers in the next few years when they ran out of cash.

If they're working such long hours, isn't that a safety issue? Where's the union when you need it to come help save the worker from themself and everyone they're putting in danger around themself...oh wait.

And this abuse all rolls through retirement benefits for life. The public sector is badly broken. But that doesn't stop the Left from wagging its finger at the private sector. The biggest losses, the biggest ponzi schemes, the biggest waste, it's all in what's done by government.

Here's a great editorial on the public union scam.

That is alot, some with master's degrees and who work in police or child protection and have to deal with unstable, resistant people don't make that much, even when you factor in the straight pay rate per hour.

Has the city of Madison ever heard of the DOT? Federal regulations say that one cannot be behind the wheel for longer than 11 hours in a day or 70 hours in 8 days. Using that math, the numbers do not add up. These guys are breaking the law by driving so many hours and all it does is make the paper about how much money they make??? How about how much time they are behind the wheel? If there is ever an accident in Madison involving a city bus, I hope they have their insurance paid cuz it is gonna cost a lot of money to settle that lawsuit.
