A Morrison County grand jury has indicted a 64-year-old Little Falls man on two counts of first-degree premeditated murder in the Thanksgiving Day shooting deaths of two teens.

Byron D. Smith is accused of fatally shooting 18-year-old Haile Kifer and 17-year-old Nick Brady after the unarmed cousins broke into his rural Little Falls house. Each first-degree murder count carries a penalty of life in prison without parole.

Initially, Smith was charged with two counts of second-degree murder. In order to bring someone to trial for first-degree murder in Minnesota, a grand jury indictment must be issued.

Smith made an initial appearance Thursday, April 25, before Morrison County District Judge Douglas Anderson.
