Minneapolis: Target headquarters declared clear after shots-fired report

Police responded to reports of shots fired inside the 11-story Retek building, part of the Target headquarters in downtown Minneapolis on Friday, Nov. 16, but did not find evidence of any shots fired.

The all-clear was issued at 1:30 p.m. after police and K-9s swept the building, according to Sgt. Stephen McCarty.

Roughly a dozen squad cars and a SWAT team were dispatched to 10th Street South and Nicollet Avenue after the shots-fired reports were received around 11:30 a.m.

The shots fired call came to a building security office and possibly originated from the 10th floor, McCarty said. Security officials then called 911, he said.

Employees in the area were asked to stay in their offices, according to reports on Twitter, Facebook and Reddit during the search.

"We're all in a conference room. They had an announcement (over the PA) that there was a situation and we should go into a locked office," said Julia Brosz, a Target store planner who works in the downtown Retek Building.

"We've been in here about an hour and 15 minutes. We don't know anything, just a lot of rumors," she said when reached by phone at 12:15 p.m.

Brosz was in a locked room on the 11th floor with about 50 other employees, she said.

University of St. Thomas public safety issued an alert advising students to "remain in place until all clear." The University of St. Thomas' downtown campus is about one block west of the Retek building.
