It was sad to read St. Paul Public Schools' announcement that it was ending charter school sponsorship within St.

This just in. According to Mary Jo Meadow SPORTS are the root of all evil, and responsible for the "dumbing down of America." Makes you kind of wonder what Mary Jo has been smoking? Or maybe she stopped taking her meds.

Mary Jo Meadow - in the old days, like the 50s and 60s and 70s, the main thing being foisted on our young people were thousands of images of smokers and smoking. Then, there were all the messages of male superiority that dominated every TV show and movie. I think cheering the home team is just harmless fun compared to what we grew up with.

The name "thissucks" fits you! If you need any further proof of what sports is doing to this country, try watching tne "news" a little closer. For instance, Farve's plane lands, and the "news" breaks into regular programming to show it. No one gets off for an hour, but the cameras train on the plane like it's the return of Christ. I repeat, they BROKE INTO REGULAR PROGRAMMING for this! If that isn't dumbing down to you, there's no hope for you.

Poor Mary Jo has such a difficult time sorting things out. Apparently she feels slighted if she can't be constatantly bombarded with one crisis after another. Apparently Mary Jo hasn't learned that the real world also includes a little recreational break from time to time, just to keep things in perspective.

And what terribly enlightening and intellectual programming are you speaking of when you complain (in ALL CAPS I might add) that your regular programming was broke into? Were you watching some educational program on Discovery? Wait no, that would be cable. Uhm, maybe PBS? Uhm nope again. News? Or was it something like the mentally stimulating American Idol or Two and a Half Men? VERY important indeed. Talk about dumbing down. Indeed, its quite apparent there is no hope for you either. Welcome to the club Oh enlightened one.

Most likely Maury Povich, Judge Judy, or one of those other important and educational shows.

One or the other what? No, I don't think we should return to smoking ad's and dumb broads. And, I think breaking into regular programming to watch Brett Favre return was rediculous. But really, its all pretty harmless. Now, reality shows like Real Houesewives and Whatever Gone Wild - now those are much more dumbing down than supporting a sport. Though waaaaaay too much money gets spent on sports, I do think they contribute in many positive ways - sports in schools give kids excersize and a sense of teamwork. Sports in community's can bind them together in a fun way. I just don't see supporting the home team as anything other than a breather from war, unemployment, nasty politics, etc.

OK, so enlighten me. What breaking informational programming did it "break into?" Some courtroom reality B.S.? Or maybe a soap opera? Heaven help us all!!! You're ilk are the same ones that complained to the networks on 11/22/1963 when the President was killed in Dallas. They were complaining because "their soap" wasn't on. Does the death of a president compare with a QB landing at the airport; as far as importance goes? No. What does matter is WHAT IS NEWS!!! What matters to people. Look at the "Most Read," on the homepage here, the Strib, or any other major newspaper in the country. In most cases at least 7 of the 10 headlines will be sports related. Face it, people in this country LOVE SPORTS, love competition. If you don't; fine stick with the Christian Science Monitor and PBS and you won't need to be bothered. Thanks for the compliment on the name "thissucks," because in this case you really do.

Well, well, the "intelligent" sports crowd fights back. Problem is they're guessing what programs I might be watching and dismissing the ones I don't watch. Gee, I'm sorry, fellas. I didn't realize the hour long shot of Bret Farve's plane was more interesting than any of the programs you decided I was watching ... or wasn't, as the case may be. But you've proved the letter writer was on the right track, except, you're not dumbed down, you're downright stupid!

Well, well.... Look whos back...

To whom are you speaking to specifically?

I could easily check the programming that would have been on at the time if I really felt that inclined but even at a guess there simply is not THAT many options seeing as how the "break in" would have been limited to local network garbage due to the content of the breaking news (Hardly a national event). So I shall ask again, what was it that you missed and that has your panties in such a terrible ruffle?.... Enlighten us with your tragic programming loss. Or is it that you just hate the fact that you made a moron of yourself with your poorly chosen basis of arguement that was shredded and exposed for its own level of stupidity?

Or are you just upset that sports holds a far higher interest to the public at large than some of your own past-times? Whats your REAL beef here Nancy?

I know it's hard for the muscle-heads to understand, but some of of care absolutely nothing about sports. ESPN is there for you with endless testosterone (or estrogen for the ladies sports?). How often does ESPN get preempted for REAL news. Why should other NEWS be preempted by sports?

Tom, you are so right. Saint Paul Public Schools is operating out of fear.

People have choices and there will be other charter authorizers. Enrollment and test scores will continue to decline. And the Board of Education and administration will blame lack of funds.

I would love to see an accounting of the results from the $20+million in ARRA stimulus funds the district spent the last two years!

All, try attending a school board meeting. Count the number of times the words "student" , "child" , or their derivatives are used. It will be close to zero each time. The school district is organized for adults and their jobs, not for student academic achievement. The amount of bickering and posturing by and between the school board and administration, teacher union, etc. Is deplorable.

And another generation fails...

Look I'm going to try to spell this out so maybe even a sawdust-gelatin, brain like YOU can understand it. No, you won't see "REAL news" pre-empting programming on ESPN. Because ESPN is a SPORTS network. just as they don't pre-empt programming for "REAL news," on The Food channel, the Cartoon Network, Discovery, Disney etc., etc. It's called specialization. ESPN's specialty is SPORTS! News can be pre-empted by sports, because sports are NEWS. Don't believe it? As I pointed out previously, just look at the "Most Read" stories on the homepage here and any other major paper. 6-8 of the most read invariably are sports related, and that's 7 days a week.

Thank you for making my point. The populous has been dumbed down to the point that more people care about entertainment than actual events that affect their lives and pocketbooks.
