And how many moose? What part of the number of predation deaths hasn't increased significant;ly don't you understand?

Black bears eat 6 deer fawn each! That means they are hurting the moose population.

What!?!

Once a black bear killed a moose in it's nest, so they hurt the over all numbers.

What a dunce.

The BWCA fire killed off their habitat.
Moose like whitetail deer are fighting a battle they can't win.
It's most likely the overpopulation of WOLVES, which are killing the young and sick moose at an increasing rate. Hunting (by the regular population) is not the cause, but that is who is paying the price.

Bears are mostly plant/seed eaters, they generally don't eat meat unless they are desperate. Maybe there are too many bears in northern Minnesota, especially the kind that wear COLLARS.

It's impossible to know how many moose that the indians take, I would suspect that whatever the numbers are, they are probably way too LOW.

It's really quite sad. The moose hunting in this state has been so WIDELY abused, by indians and non-indians alike. I'll bet that most of you don't know, that at one time, there was a caribou herd that thrived in this state.

think, learn, then post.
trill then, shut up or look like the fool you are...
For once, tick, I agree with you. Black bears generally don't eat meat. They prefer plants, roots, berries, bee nests, nuts, etc.

Unless a bear is really starving, and finds a weakened moose, such an encounter is rare.

Black bears are not like Grizzlies, which eat a lot of meat.

It surprised me to see a video of a black bear taking a moose calf.

BUT I have read that black bear do take fawn deer, on average of 6 each spring. So taking a healthy moose calf shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

When a black bear is hungery they take whatever they can catch. In spring young deer and moose are an easy catch.

Black bear are at the top of the food chain, if they can catch it they eat it.

Black bears prey on deer to a much higher degree than one would think. The great state of Pennsylvania conducted some studies on survival of white-tailed deer from birth to a year old or so.

For the study which was conducted in northcentral PA two sites were chosen a primarily wooded site and another containing a number of farms. One to two week old fawns were run down and outfitted with radio collars and tracked for the unsueing months to evaluate the effect that coyotes have on deer as well as other causes of death.

What was surprizing was that black bears actually killed more deer than the coyotes, and remember, in short distances black bears can outrun even adult deer. I would certainly believe that bears are a substantial factor in the decrease in certain northcentral counties of Pennsylvania of the deer population. Some counties harvest a couple hundred bears annually but the deer population is only half as large as twenty years ago when bears were not as common.

Check out the PA Game commission site which used to have the diaries of activities in the study.

Can't be.

Everyone says Black Bear don't kill deer.

The DNR is mum.
